  • Alto Flute Range

Anyone thoughts on why the alto flute extends to E3?

All sources would seem to indicate that G3 is the widely accepted end game for this instrument. I found myself writing music this evening with these wonderfully sonorous low extensions only to realise that I was playing out of range! Now I need to rewrite... (Bass Flute not an option by the way, not available in the orchestra for whom I'm writing!)

  • The same thing happened to me, too, a couple of weeks ago. (But I prefer that the VSL extends beyond the normal ranges than the other way round.)

But I'm curious what kind of instrument has been used!

  • I have the Alto Flute download, but never noticed the existence of those lower notes. I've never worked with the real instrument, but always limited myself to low G as the bottom note.
