  • strings pitch shift etc

I was just sitting and wondering how controlled glissando (pitch shift) on strings would sound more realistic.

I think it must require to have every single player sampled with its own pitch shift. Is that on the roadmap btw?

Doing it with all articulations may also automatically make the orchestral strings sound even more realistic without the need of solo or real recorded strings.

Just another thought about strings: Is there a way to control up & down bow? Sometimes I'd like to have my appassionata strings start on the bow tip or change bow direction on the same note. I haven't bought solo strings yet, but it must be even more important to control it on those.

    A) First of all: You can't control the up- or down- bow. The VI has up to four versions with single notes (staccatos, détaché short and long etc.).

But the VI selects them automatically.

    B) If you want to simulate the change of the bow direction leave a gap of 50ms (perf-legato articulation) and the perf articulation starts again.

    C) More important is to take correct (natural) articulations.

So it could make sense to change the articulation with every new note - just as it happens with a live performance.

Please checkout the Demo which shall show this thesis. This demo shows that the question of the bow direction is not really existing.

    All the best

  • Hello! Thank you for your reply.

My question about the pitch shift was about if VSL are thinking about planning to sample orchestral strings with all the players together but sampled into individual player samples, so that you can choose exactly how many that are playing. That would make pitch shifting realistic and articulations and depth of sound ultra realistic. I'm sure it would require better machines and a lot more hd space, but I think it would be as long as you can get when it comes to string sampling. How could someone put it even further?

And thanks for the demo on your site and your advices. I've checked it out!

    Have a nice day!
