  • [SOLVED] VE Percussion and Sibelius not triggering articulation changes

So I just bought and installed the Percussion Collection. Everything seems fine except that when I load the Matrices for the Marimba, and indicate rolls in Sibelius the articulation changes do not take effect. I am a long time user of Special edition and special edition plus and have no problems like this with those sets...

    More info:

In Sibelius: I have one instance of VE loaded with the VE Percussion Sound Set in the Playback devices window. In Manual Sound sets I have one instrument (Marimba, sound id: pitched percussion.wood.marimba) loaded in channel 1.  I have installed and imported the VSL House Style, and installed the VE Percussion Sound set and the Percussion VI Presets into the VSL Custom Data folder.

In VE: I have loaded the matrix called L1 05 Marimbaphone into channel 1 (and when I look at the Patch Assign page all the cells of the matrix are there and work when I switch them manually with the mouse), but when I indicate a roll with any of the +tremolo.unmeasured sound ID changes (Stem cross-slashes or the trem Technique text) the switch is not made.

Strangely, the snare drum seems to work as intended...

I must be missing something because I don't see other users with these issues. Can you please help?

I'm using a mac pro running OSX 10.6.3 with 16Gbs RAM.

    Thanks in advance.

    Jeff

  • Hello Jeff!

I guess you have loaded the wrong matrix. The VE Percussion sound set will only work with the presets made for it. Please load the preset (with Preset Assign) Marimba L1 for the Marimba. You can find it in the folder Percussion VI Presets/Mallets/Standard.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Great thanks for that... it mostly works now.

(Should I be loading Presets in SE and SE+ as well? I've always just loaded instruments from the Assign Matrix screen...)

But I digress... I said the percussion collection mostly works: it is working now with regard to articulations, but not to mallet changes. For instance only "hard", "soft", and "bowed" seem to work at all. And once I've indicated bowed, none of the others work anymore on that stave....

I must be screwing something up... but can't see what it might be. Again, please help.

    Jeff

  • Hi Jeff!

Most of the articulation changes (Sound IDs) you enter for one staff add up although they sometimes contradict each other (for example tremolo and bowed). If changes sometimes do not work as expected, it often helps to enter the technique text "ord." before a new articulation change. This resets the Sound ID. You can hide the "ord." command for layout considerations if you want.

For the Special Edition (and SE PLUS) loading the matrices for use with the sound sets is correct. For all other collections there are custom made VI presets.

  • Hi Andi.

I tried entering "ord." but it has no effect.  Also as I said, the commands "Soft medium", "Soft Plus", etc -- all but "soft", "hard" and "bow" have no effect at all, even if I've entered no other tech text commands work at all. I've tried starting with an entirety new Playback configuration, and starting a wholly new VE set up.  Sounds like you don't think I'm doing anything "structurally" wrong. That's good. But it's still not functioning as it should.

Another question... I don't really understand what Ensemble is doing when loading presets... For example when I load an instrument in SE Plus, using the Matrix Assign screen, it often takes up to 10-20 seconds for the matrix to load all the underlying patches. When I load a preset in VE Percussion, it loads many matrices in a matter of just a few seconds. What up with that? Is it actually loading all those matrices into memory?

  • Hello Jeff!

Did you buy the standard or the extended library? In the standard library you only have the soft and hard mallets for the marimba. If you have the extended library please load the L2 preset.
The switches all work fine on my machine.

How long it takes to load a matrix or preset depends on the number of samples included. Some percussion presets include less samples than SE matrices.

    Best,
    Andi

  • Hey Andi.

yep, I figured that out right after the last email. Everything seems to work correctly now (I do have the extended collection). So the issue was that I didn't know about presets. I guess most people come at it having used VSL rather than VSLSE. You guys may want to modify the pdf (which is really great, otherwise, BTW) that comes with the percussion pack so that emphasizes that Presets are to be loaded .(I seem to remember that the example of loading instruments into Ensemble shows illustrations of SE and SE Plus instruments being loaded rather than percussion.)

Anyway you guys do great work and thanks a lot.

    Jeff
