  • recording velocity x fade and CC11

This is my first project with vienna Special Edition and vienna ensemble.  I have been successful in creating 8 tracks that I have routed through vienna ensemble and cubase 5.  I have assigned  midi controllers to controll the velocity x fade and the expression.  all notes have been imputed and I am beginning to work on the mix. When I play the track and make x fade and expression adjustments I hear them in real time as i turn the knobs--and I see the automation being written in cubase, but once I play back the track, none of my adjustments are recognized, as if they don't exist.

This is probably a simple fix, but I just can't seem to figure it out. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

  • I notice that you said, "when you play the track and make x fades etc you hear it in real-time".  It sounds like the problem is you're not "recording" the midi commands.

You need to pick the midi track you want to record xfades and expressions on and literally hit "record" and record right on top of the other track and then merge the two together.

  • Thanks cgernaey for your response. Right clicked on the velocity x-fader and assigned the PAN knob on my tascam 1884 as the controller and it works. Go into Cubase 5, read and write enable the track--open up the PAN automation lane--read and write enable the automation lane--hit record, play, and create some velocity cross fades which I hear as I am recording.  The automation track notates the cross fade actions.  When I play back the software is not recognizing the automation.

I have already inputed the notes and i'm trying to "add" xfades to already created midi. Is that a problem? Since I am not adding new information to the "in this case" cello track there is nothing new recorded on the midi track--only on the automation track.

Thanks for helping and I hope I have been clear.

  • Please try using a fader and not pan. Does this make a difference?

  • All of my midi notes came from a midi file created in Finale 2010.  I just tried to use the vienna instruments virtual keyboard to imput some notes on that same cello track.  The automation lane showed the activity of the xfader I was using, but no midi notes were recorded onto the track.

It is as if cubase and vienna ensemble are not talking to each other.

I used the finale midi files and expression maping to assign the proper articulation to the parts.  But it seems there is still some mis-communication between the two programs.

    Any thoughts.

  • Thanks to all who responded.  The problem has been solved.  Here is what I did.  I opened up the key editor and opened up the panning control lanes and found that there were some data.  I simply erased that data and that solved most of the problems.  I also had to clear all of the data off the automation lanes which solved the remaining issues. Now the x fader works using any midi controller.
