  • Demos for comparing the " Vienna Choir" with the "Download Choir"

    Hello all of the family

I have prepared some demos for comparing the legatos (Aahs) of the two libraries.

    Further:

Some of you asked for a demo of the male section of the new Vienna Choir.

You will also find one: La Montanara - a famous song in Europe, composed by Toni Ortelli, 1927 and later arranged for male voice choir by Luigi Pigarelli.

    • Tenor 1
    • Tenor 2
    • Bass 1
    • Bass 2
    • Bass 3

You will also find a Youtube link for listening to the original song..

    This and more at: http://www.beat-kaufmann.com/vitutorials/vienna-choir/index.php

Have fun and discuss your impressions...

    All the best

  • Great demos, Beat. As I said in a previous post, I think the download choir is FAR superior to the Vienna Choir. The Vienna Choir has hardly any "glide" in between notes, even in the "espresivo legato" patch.

  • Thanks so much Beat.

I have to say, I also prefer the portamento effect of the download choirs to the new Vienna Choir.  Not for everything perhaps, but as a realistic legato, it sounds marginally more convincing.  Just so I'm clear, are these two completely different products, or does one receive the download choirs if one orders the new Vienna Choir?

Thanks again for the illuminating examples.

  • For TH or for VSL?

  • Well...for VSL...don't you think so?

  • That's nothing compared to their second demo.

  • Very impressive.

  • In fact it is impressive , but which parts are just "prerecorded phrase" (it could be that from demo#2 it is just one sample for the first half, second half is mainly vocals and special effects)

I am still missing some "extremely epic" and cinematic VSL choir demo. (e.g.: phantom menace, lord of the rings ...)

This might be a much better comparision ;)

Edit: As i was singing this 3 years ago in vienna I googled a little bit here a link to that's a piece out of lotr which might be also a good demo:

  • Many thanks for the links.

As someone who has just ordered Vienna Choirs, I have to confess this feels a little like a punch in the guts.

I've no doubt that Vienna Choirs will be excellent, but the solo voices in Requiem sound truly spectacular, and the latin phrases, which seemingly can be tempo-synced to the host, would be hugely useful, even if they are just sampled phrases.  I can only hope that VSL update their choirs library in due course.  They have always offered the most comprehensive libraries in the market, and it would be a huge shame if this library was surpassed in terms of quality and dynamism within a few days of release.  The Requiem demos are offering a level of atmosphere and 'bite' which for film score work just takes things to another level, and which I'm not (yet) hearing in the VSL demos.

Just my view of course.  Here's hoping I'm wrong, or that this library can evolve to keep it at the head of the market.

  • From what I understand, the only phrases are some latin "chants" which are just words sung unison on one note.  Beyond that, everything else is multisamples - while there is no word builder, there seem to be many consonants and a few vowels as well as the ability to mix and match various latin words from the chants by varying sample start time and other things.  So instead of musical phrases, the chants are just strings of latin words that can be mixed and matched.

  • Hi all!

This would be quite interresting to know. I just read some review about forgotten voices some time ago which made me think in this direction (to be honest i have no experience with tonehamer products at all)

  • Forgotten Voices have phrases, the choir only has the chants which are latin "sentences" on one note.

  • Thanks Mike, i have not been aware of this.

They added now a tech demo to their HP which gives quite good insight on how the things are done.
