  • reverb problems

    Hello Folks!

I have been struggling with the sound of my VSL Special edition a bit (not the extended version). I assume that it is a reverb problem so I wonder if there any of you has great advice in how to use reverb with the SE instruments.

Up to now I am using the pre-send option of my instruments, when I am sending it to the reverb via AUX so that I am able to regulate the amount of wet&dry signal better. The problem with this way is: When I pan my instrument within the orchestra and send it to the stereo reverb, I get back a signal which is no more panned but placed in the midst of the stereo field. As this happens to all the Instruments, the whole mix tends to sound rather muddy and undefined. I hope you guys can help me out!

    thanks,

    jazz

  • Hello Jazz

I suspect that you didn't switch off the dry part of the reverb.

Make sure that you only use the wet part of your reverb. This is important when you mix the reverb with the "Send-Function"

Another possibility is that you create a Group-/Buss- Track for each depth you want to have.

Route the all the signals through the corresponding Reverb Track.

  • Hi Beat!

Thanks a lot, This helped me so much! :) I tried to use different layers of reverbs and it worked just fine.

When I tried to implicate this into Vienna Ensemble though, I had trouble loading different instances of my reverb.

    For example:

I opened three layers of Vienna Ensemble to create Instrument groups ( I think it's a mess to put all instruments on one channel and thus one VE instance in terms of composing). So I have an instance for brass, Strings and Percussion right now. In each Instance of VE i created a bus, in which i loaded my reverb, so i can control the reverb of each instrument group seperately in VE. Unfortunately when I do this, only one instance of my reverb will actually play. The other instances will just be silent, no input, no output. If I remove my reverb from one bus, my signal is back again.

I thought the initial idea of using VE as a grouping tool was not too bad, but right now I feel like I should just switch back to the old school "one channel-one instrument" setting. Maybe anyone has an idea though, what the problem could be...

thanks! Gosh, this stuff is hard :D

    Hi jazz

Creating "logical" groups of registers could be a possibility for using the VE in an efficient way.

As an example: Load the complete Chamber Strings  in to the VE and save this setup as "Chamber-Strings-Section".

This Setup includes all the Chamber Strings (Violin1, 2, Viola, Cello and DB-Bass) with the correct pannings and perhaps also with the

    EQ-Settings but without any reverb/depth.

Do this also for a Woodwind-, a Brass- and a Percussion-Section or what ever you need.

The Handling of the Room you can create outside the VEs - that means in the DAW.

Maybe you have saved some combinations of depths within your DAW-Mixer as well.

Now you are able to put together any orchestra in a short time by loading the corresponding VE-Preset(s).

Choose a Mixer-Preset - for example  "Large Concert Hall" or what ever you have saved before - rout the VE(s) through the corresponding depth(s)... within the DAW

With such preconditions (presets) you are able to get any combination in a very short time.

    Kind regards
