Lost Playback Configuration in Sibelius
Hello, I am experiencing a similar problem I read on a previous post, but my situation is differen. I continuously lose my playback configuration for An orchestral piece using five different VE Pro projects. I consciously save my Playback configuration and soundsets, but each time I reopen sibelius, the configuration is listed, but all I can go to User/Library/Application/Sibelius/Playback configurations and see my devices listed there in the correct folder titled "orchestral piece 2010" I have no other problems with any other playback configurations except for the ones I use with VE Pro running on a separate G5 over LAN. I am not attempting to rename the devices or anything. Please help Thanks Chris

Hello CBones55!
I don't fully understand the problem yet. Can you describe exactly what happens, when you try to open the score/Playback Configuration?
Are the five VE Pro instances listed as activated or is the list empty?
What happens, when you click on Show/Connect?Did you open Vienna Ensemble server on the slave computer before opening Sibelius?
Best regards,
Andi

Hi Andi, The five instances of VE Pro are not listed, when I restart Sibelius, the active devices list is empty. My connection is also very sporadic, when I add a new device and click show/connect sometimes all the instances are listed and sometimes there is nothing. I'm not sure if these are related or different issues. I do open VE on the slave computer first, always, Thank you... Once again the playback configuration is listed and I can find the file with all the VE files and the altiverb file, but they do not arise in Sibelius. Also, Is it better to use AU or VST instances of VE Pro on a Mac G5?

If you haven't done so yet, I recommend downloading and installing the latest version of VE Pro on all machines. It may be a problem if different versions of VE Pro are installed on the master and on the slave computer.
You write that your network connection is sporadic. Do you mean with VE Pro or in general?
On Mac I would use the AU version of VE Pro, although both should work.
Best,
Andi

Hi Andi, I have installed the new version on both machines, My network connection only has an issue with VE Pro. What could be causing sibelius not to remember a configuration using VE Pro instances? The proper startup would be to open the servers on the slave... I open a 32- bit instance, and a 64- bit instance because for some reason the 32-bit instance crashes after loading three projects... This slave machine is a a new massive G5 > >2X2.93 GHz Quad-Core intel xeon >32 GB 1066 Mhz DDR3 >running OSX 10.6 >4 Drives of 1 TB each I only get up to 6-7 GB of RAM on the 32 bit before it crashes. But it seems to allow me to load an orchestral situation if I spilt the load between the 32 bit and 64 bit. So I load up these two metaframes... On the 32 bit it has (Woodwind, Brass, Percussion) on the 64 bit (Chamber Strings and Harp) Then On the master computer I start Sibelius correct? And load a P{layback device VE Pro AU for each project, then connect by show/connect. I spent 7 hours on this yesterday, finally got it working only to wake up to day and find it not functioning again, and the configuration not saved. Thank you

I don't understand why you open the 32bit server at all. 32bit applications can't use more than about 3 GB RAM on a Mac. That's probably the reason why it crashes after some time. I would just start the 64 bit VE Pro server on your slave machine. You can connect all the VE Pro instances on your master to the same server application.
It's not necessary to create or load metaframes when working with Sibelius. These settings and the settings on the Manual Sound Sets page are all stored in the Playback Configuration. I wouldn't add any VE Pro instances before opening Sibelius, but add the instances from the Sibelius/Playback Devices menu.
I hope this helps.
Best,
Andi

Hi Andi, I thought it would help.. however, after working all this morning and everything seemed fine, I had to shut down sibelius and came back this evening only to find all My active devices are no longer there in the playback config.. I saved routinely for the Orchestral Piece... It's madness... I am now running just the slave through the 64 bit server... I start the VE server first, and then open sibelius... and previously today sibelius automatically added the projects on the server as the playback configuration loaded... However now there are no projects in sibelius playback. Once again if I follow the Playback configuration folder path I can see the XML file for "Chris 2" and the data file... holding the reverb altiverb and 6 instances of Vienna... However, they will not show in my sibelius' playback devices page. Any more ideas on what could be causing this confusion. I can't spend an hour every morning loading up manual soundsets for 80 players... It's crazy... There has to be something up. One thing I have wondered, is when you add a new instance of VE pro AU... you show the instance... it loads an instance on the slave... then I load up a project (woodwinds, brass, etc...) in that instance, adding and editing instruments as need be in VE Pro... When I save that project on the slave in order to backup the details I have edited... Could the saving mess up Sibelius' playback config process? Thank you

Hi CBones55!
Do you mean the Playback Configurations list in the Sibelius Playback Devices window is empty? If this is the case, this is clearly a Sibelius problem. I didn't hear about this problem yet, but maybe Sibelius support knows something about it. Maybe uninstalling and reinstalling Sibelius will help.
Saving your VIFrames on the slave machine can do no harm to the Sibelius Playback Configuration.
Best,

Hi Andi, I contacted Sibelius, and they said they have not heard of this happening. No the list of playback configurations is in tact, there are no other issues with any other playback configs that run other plugins (kontakt, Spectrasonics,Arturia), only the configuration that is saved with VE Pro instances. The playback list is there, the name of the config (I named it Chris (2), I have also tried several others) But when I reload Sibelius all the active devices which I set up and saved as well as the manual soundsets are gone, as if I never entered anything. But as I said, I carefully save each step, and I can see the folder in Sibelius' Playback Config folder on the hard drive. It definitely has something to do with VSL communicating with Sibelius.. I have approx 10 or so other configurations which have no issues and run several effects and plugins. What am I supposed to do? I invested an insane amount of money into VSL... it should function correctly? Thank you C

Hey Chris,
You might have already tried this - but do you re-name any of the VEPro instances in Sibelius active devices?? i.e. to 'Brass' or 'Violins I' etc??
I had a similar problem to you, where I would lose all my data when I tried to re-load the configuration, but when I stopped re-naming my active instances, my playback configuration was always saved!
Worth a shot!
Best regards,
knievel

Thank you or the reply knievel, however, I have not renamed any of the instances. I leave them as Vienna Ensemble Pro, Vienna Ensemble Pro (2), Vienna Ensemble Pro (3)... It is very mysterious, everytime I open up the sibelius session, all playback config data is lost that relates to VE. There is some sort of software conflict, I have no other issues with any other plug--ins. If you think of anything else please send it along... Thank you, Chris
