Dynamics of Guy Bacos
Hello all, just listen to a demo of Guy Bacos ('Sunlit Sorrow' http://www.guybacos.com/audio/Sunlit%20sorrow%20VGL.mp3) and I ask myself how does he achieve such a dynamic, such a lyrical performance? Only with the Velocity X-Fade controler alone? And operate the controler while playing/ recording (live) or make it after in the midi editor? In both cases I can't reach such a consistent dynamics... What's the secret? How to make it easy and effective?

Hello Raben, hello Sirthoms
I assume, that Guy Bacos used the X-Fade function for drawing the dynamics.
Further, he obviously produced audiotracks so that he was able to enhance the dynamics a bit with the track automation (he supported volume with it)
So you can get the VI dynamic twice or more.
And finally it seems to me that he didn't use a compressor for making a louder volume in total.
These matters lead to the dynamic as it is - as you can listen to.
If you want to know it exactly > send a mail to Guy...

Hi,
Sorry, I just saw this.
I'll have to open the file and see what I did. I would expect nothing fancy though. The midi system allows a dynamic range between 1-127 as we know, not always sufficient for stronger dynamics. I always use the maximum natural dynamics allowed by the samples. ex. cresc 4s, 6s, 8s etc or with the velo fader, which ever works best. And then, and only then, you should use volume fader or automation to enhance the dynamic if you are still lacking that dramatic effect, it's part of the sample bargain we have to deal with to get the effect we want sometimes :) . One thing I never do is use vol alone for expression, it's all in the right balance in cases like these. As far as compression, as Beat mentioned, I'm not a fan of this, so I doubt very much this was the case, and compression will tend to crush your dynamic range, but I'll know more when I open the file, although the overall vol was probably boosted.
