  • Independent Volume/Pan automation in a Logic multi?

Is volume and pan always global in a multi timbral vienna ensemble pro logic setup? I'm now reworking my orchestral templates for this setup but i've been using both volume (CC7) and expression (CC11) in my programming. Expression for the dynamic ups and downs of notes and phrases, and then volume to adjust longer passages. Now if I'm going to be working with multis it looks like I won't be able to program this way anymore which is a real drag. Is there a way around this? Can I use a separate vienna ensemble pro instance for each and every instrument which would be over 100 or so?

  • I don't know about pan, as MIDI pan is pretty much useless for stereo samples, but the global CC7 is a "feature" of Logic.

You won't be able to use enough instances of VEP to do what you want, so you will need to do a search of this forum to find out how to transform the Volume information to another CC.

  • Thanx DG - yeah i figured that was the case - a pretty finicky workaround!!! Bizarre that Apple has never addressed this gaping hole.

  • Hi, I may be able to help. I spent months and months tearing my hair out trying to use a VI with multi-timbral Logic. Volume would never work independently like I had been used to in DP and PT. It's consequently why I tend to not use Logic unless a client insists upon it. I agree it's a shame. HOWEVER... I have set up a template that may address your issue using the transformer. I used it once with Vienna Ensemble and also Kontakt 4. If you still need it and I am correct in thinking that you want 16 independent midi channels and there own volume for automating, then give me a shout. THE PLOT THICKENS.....after gettting it working there is a couple of odd things. MIDI channels have no solo button, so you have to use the solo mode button (which isn't a terrible thing. AND, when I tried this with EW PLAY it would only allow 8 channels per instance (because of the stereo outputs). Vienna gives you more, as does Kontakt. But my point is, you could get varied results depending on the VI. Your question is on VIENNA so I think you'll be happy with it. Let me know, M

  • If you want to really use CC7 and PAN it is better to use one VE PRO with your 100 instrument and in Logic you use IAC

    If not :

    What I have done :

    Transform CC7 to CC 11

I have define the panning in the VE PRO and filter panning CC coming out of Logic

If you want a screen copy of what to do,  send me your mail in a PM
