  • MIR and New iMac I7 under Windows 7

    Hello everyone.

I am new on the forum and I am happy to come among you.

Does somebody have to use the new  iMac i7 under Windows with MIR? With how much RAM?(12-16Go?)

How that does it function ?

    How much Vienna Instruments?

Thank you to speak to us about your experiment.

Good music with our dear VSL.

  • Welcome Florestan,

Thanks for your friendly "Hello" and your interest in Vienna MIR!

To be honest, I have no personal experience with the setup you seem to have in mind, but I'm sure the guys with the necessary knowledge will chime in soon :-)

What I can say for sure is that 12-16 GB RAM are usually sufficient for arrangements with up to 60 and more Vienna Instruments, especially when you make good use of the VI's RAM-saving feature. This will also depend on the RAM demands of the Venue (i.e. the multi impulse response sets) you will load into MIR, as they have to reside in RAM completely.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello Mac and Mir Users,

Did nobody among you have experience with new iMac i7 under Windows 7 and MIR?

I renew my request on this subject.

I am also interested by your experiments with Mac Pro under Windoxs 7 with MIR.

    Thank you for your answers.

    And Good Music!

    Florestan

  • to be honest, we didn't try MIR on an iMac so far, the more because our iMacs here won't be powerfull enough.

however, to my knowledge the new iMac has an i5 and not an i7 processor @ 2.66 GHz with dual channel RAM @ 1066 MHz so you would get at least somewhere - with a higher latency (1024?) and stereo only though ...

system + MIR + MIR rooms would require about 5GB memory, everything more you have is available then for loading instruments (eg. all instruments from the special edition ~ 3.5 GB)

my recommendation: give it a try with a demo license (the room which comes with the demo also needs less memory)

  • Thank you cm and Dietz for your answers.

There exists really a model i7 860, 2,8Ghz for new  iMac. It is an option on Apple Store.

But I would like to explain why I put these questions.

In fact, I work on iMac 2.4 Ghz, 4Go RAM, Logic Pro 9, VSL Symphonic Cube. I must buy a more powerful computer for MIR.

I would prefer to buy a Mac and Windows 7 for that, except if somebody gives me the proof that ,with an equivalent processor and the same quantity of RAM, MIR functions better on a PC Windows. (currently, around me, it is said to me that Windows functions better on Apple! But without proof!).

For the price I compared some prices of Mac and computers proposed by Xi Machines (VSL Certified Workstation) :

    1) 4 Core, i7 860, 2,8Ghz

    A) Apple iMac 27 one Education Store:

     1860 euro - 4 Go RAM (max: 16 Go)…. with a superb 27 inches screen .

    B) X1 Machine Basic:

    1549 euro - 4 Go RAM (max 16 Go)… but without screen.

    2) 8 Core, 2x 2.26 Ghz Quad Core Intel Xeon Nehalem

    A) Apple Mac Pro on Education Store:

2760 euro - 6 Go RAM (max 32 Go). Dual Channel

If we buy additional RAM elsewhere (not on Apple Store):

    3110 euro - 12 Go RAM (6x2Go)

    3840 euro - 24 Go RAM (6x4Go)

    B) X3 Machine Basic:

    3599 euro - 12 Go RAM (6x2Go) (max: 96 Go). Tripple Channel.

    4098 euro - 24 Go RAM.(6x4Go)

There are some (small or not?)[:)] differences in the configuration (for ex : 2 or 3 Channel, HD), but apparently Apple is not more expensive than Xi Machines.

If that functions as well, and only in this case, it seems that it is not necessary to be deprived of Mac to use MIR, if Mac is liked.

If you (MacUsers everywhere in the World) used MIR on Mac thank you to inform me of your experiment!!!

    Perhaps I am mistaken.

    Any explanation is welcome!

    Good Music, first of all![:)]

  • a few things more to consider:

    - the iMac has only one internal disk so audio interface and seperate harddisk has to be connected via firewire and USB (i would not connect any firewire interface besides RME daisy-chained to a harddrive). internal sATA disks are appr. 2 times faster than firewire and 3 times faster than USB ... not even taking latency (average seektime) into consideration.

important: get any iMac with the ATI option, not nVidia (open GL has issues with nVidia currently)

    - you could probably get 6 x 4 GB memory for the XI machine cheaper elsewhere, but this might not be 100% compatible and specified for the motherboard, we found the X3 to be even more silent than the macPro.

if you prefer a macPro it may be worth waiting for the 6/12 core macPros ...
