  • Mixing live players with VSL samples - mic placement for horns!

I want to mix live players with VSL samples. I want to know where (and distance)  to mic a live french horn player and blend into a VSL orchestral horn section. For example - With the next version of MIR that may allow processing of audio, I can then send my live horn recording through MIR with the VSL horns and blend together. However, I don't know where to record the horn from: back, front, above etc etc so it will blend well with the VSL samples. I guess the question is: how is the VSL french horn recorded - placement.

I will be using a Rode NT4 stereo microphone, unless forum members suggest this will not work.

    Many thanks, Leif Sundstrup

What you really need is an IR for the Silent Stage that you can use as an insert on your horn channel. Then you would be able to place it in the same space as the sample horns in MIR.

BTW I am interested in the same question, because I often use a mixture of VSL an live overdubs.
