  • Sibelius - Slow passage & how to trigger sustain patch (preserving slurred notation)?

I'm working on a slow passage for string quartet using the solo strings matrixes (VE Special Edition PLUS).

The quarter note tempo is 74 and the passage includes some sustained notes (8 beats for example). I use slurrs to indicate the phrasing for the real performers (humans ;-) ). But this way Sibelius only triggers the legato matrix cell. And the legato samples aren't long enough which results in notes that stop playing too soon.

How can I keep my notation and get Sibelius trigger the sustain matrix cell where the legato samples are too short?

  • Hello Wim!

You can exclude the slur from playback. This way the sustain patch gets triggered. You can do that in the Playback section of the properties window. Just select the slur and uncheck the box Play on Pass 1.

  • Hi Andy,

This could be a nice trick in some situations. But excluding the slur from playback will result in non legato playing of all the notes under the slur, I guess?

What if it's a passage with say 10 notes, all under one slur, with at the end of the passage a long note preceded by shorter notes which should be played legato?

  • Hi Wim!

You can't play more than one note in legato mode in one VI. The legato patches are monophonic by design.

If you want to write more notes under one slur, I'd also suggest to exclude the slur from playback, because otherwise only one note at a time can be heard.

  • Hi Andi,

It's not about monophonic or polyphonic. What I mean is a melodic line (just one note each time) , played legato, ending with a long note, all under one slur.

How to trigger the sustain matrix cell so the long note of the phrase will sound it's full length and without loosing the slur in my notation?

I wish I could include just a small picture of the musical fragment.

  • I see. In this case, you have to trick Sibelius a bit. You can do as follows:
    1) Exclude the long slur from playback
    2) Put a slur over the passage from the first note of the phrase to the last note before the long note and one more slur from the first note after the long note to the last note of the phrase. You can hide the two slurs for layout reasons.
