  • How are VSL samples recorded?

I want to create an orchestral performance using a combination of live players and the VSL sample library (I own most of the DVD collection) . However, I would like to know the following information to guide my recording techniques to produce the live players as close to VSL samples as possible:

    1. How far were the microphones from the sampled players and at what angles for each instrument?

    2. What are the reverb times and acoustic properties of the silent stage?

I just want to blend the live players as well as possible with the VSL sample library.

    Many thanks

  •  Hi Leif,

The reverb time of the Silent Stage is about 0.9 sec @ 1KHz. The angels for the instruments depend on the instrumentgroup. We recorded mostly with the ORTF system from Schopes.(CMC 6 with MK4 or MK22). Most of our instruments are recorded with just one stereo pair. To get the right sound for you recordings - trust your ears.

    Good luck
