  • My first Sibelius+VSL+MIR mockup

The first Movement of Derek Bourgeois 2nd Brass Band Concerto

This involes 24 brass and three percussion each with an average of about 8 patches about a third of which are performance patches. The stage is the GrosserSaal stage 7th row.

The mix isn't good. The bass and percussion sound too boomy.

I'm really excited by what I can now do with Sib+VSL+MIR.

If anyone has any comments particularly about how to improve the sound please don't be backward about coming forward.

You can read a bit more about the performance on the bourgeois tab of my website.

  • Hi David!

Thanks for posting this great piece of music.
Mixing is not my area of expertise. So I will not comment on this matter, but I'm impressed on the overall outcome.

    Best,
    Andi

  •  Dave,

did you made a MID file from Sibelius, and then passed it to MIR

or is it better  to connect Sibelius directly to MIR using VSL instruments or VSL Ensemble?

  • Thanks Andi - I agree the music is great. Derek Bourgeois is a VSl SE user I believe. Check out his sibelius music website he's has an extraordinary output, he's up to symphony no 51 I believe. http://www.sibeliusmusic.com/index.php?sm=account.details&uid=833

Sergino - Midi comes directly from the score in Sibelius thru virtual midi cables (loopBe30) into MIR which hosts all the VIs. No creating and transferring midi files no use of Vienna Ensemble. The Sibelius score is littered with keyswitches and midi control data. Just press play in Sibelius and hear the result.

I then recorded the output from MIR with Audacity.

Is this because you don't have a soundset for the samples you used?

  • Excuse me Dave, suppose you want to use Solo Strings.

You Open Playback devices and set Loopbe as the Active device.

In the sound set you choose VE Solostrings I+II?

And how do you set the Manual Sound Sets program name, for example, for a SS Violin?

    Thank You

    Sergino

  • No, I don't use the soundsets. I like to sculpt my performances patch by patch. I like to mix different patches for the same articulation. For instance if I have several instruments playing the same staccato passage I may have some using the staccato patch and some using the portato. Also I have several combined patches with cross fade and sometimes I'll use a patch from a different instrument if it helps achieve what i want.

I never really got into the soundsets because I felt restricted by them. I'm not just after the easiest playback but the the one that fits best with what I want.

By the way Dave your add continuous controller data is a godsend. Is there anyway I can get it to default to C19 rather C11?

Sergino, as I use manual sounset I don't have any problem with just seeting the right number of tracks per instance of LoopBe (up to sixteen of course) and just making sure that the sibelius mixer is set to the right channels and that in midi in in MIR is set to the corresponding channels. It's a little tedious with lots of instruments but very easy.

    Just create your own preset.
