  • Logic 9 out of memory when connected to VE Pro

After setting up 4 instances of VE Pro each with one instance of Kontakt (each holding one section of my orchestra) Logic Pro ran out of memory. There was nothing in Logic except for the connections to VE Pro.

That's right. With Activity Monitor showing a usage of about 400M (I assumed it would say something around 150M which is an empty project) I got the message, "Out of Memory." System had 6G left free.

I kept trying to use it and performance was so bad that I decided to quit testing. I got audio glitches at 256 samples in my audio buffer. After changing it to 512, performance was mildly better.

Also, loading a different Kontakt instance into the same VE Pro project (in other words, opening a different project) will cause Memory Server to go crazy. It won't let the Memory Server lose its RAM except on quitting (and even then not if you had tried to unload a Kontakt instance without quitting. )

It does work fine if you load up one instance and don't change anything. But then Logic (in my test) didn't have any memory to use. (even though there were 6G left free in my hardware)

So, if you have it working successfully, please let me know how to do that.

I have loaded my entire old template into Logic Pro 9 AND my new entire template into 4 instances of VE Pro (but not connecting the two) and everything works fine.

  • It seems that this behavior is due to VE Pro needing to be first program loaded after a clean boot.  This has solved problems for the most part.

So, Mac users beware that they need to open VE Pro before any other app.  This is not much more than a slight inconvenience but it would be cool if this weren't the case.

VE Pro is very touchy.  I tried to load a new instrument into an instance of Kontakt and VE Pro froze (beachball).  Then when I went back to SAVE my Logic project, Logic froze (spinning beach ball).

Had to Force Quit both and this means that VE Pro does not allow Kontakt to know that it is quitting hence its Memory Server does not clear.

At this point I had to reboot the machine and start over again.  (load up my entire template again)  Hoping for a new build soon.

  • Hi Ron, Yes, you want to launch the servers first. This is also what you have to do with Plogue Bidule or Kontakt as a standalone unless you want apps to open in ReWire, so most of us are probably used to that workflow.

  • Thanks Jay.  Nick B alerted me to that after I had panicked.  But I was always starting the server before Logic.  I now realize that I have to boot the server before anything else at all on my Mac Pro.  So, I had followed the instructions but didn't read between the lines.

I'm not used to booting a template that is fully loaded.  I always left my percs pretty empty so that I could add only what I need.  Yesterday, VE Pro froze when I added an instrument to my template in the middle of a composition.  Only VE Pro and Logic were running except for the other various background program s that have to run in the system.

I hope this was a fluke.  Time will tell.
