  • Reverb Cause Sib6/VE to lock up

I defined an orchestra setup using 4 instances of VE. They play fine (without reverb). But if I try to add any reverb to any of the instances, the computer locks up. According to VE, I have about 900MB free ram. Surely the reverb is not taking more than that. Mark

  • Please give complete details about your computer, OS, reverb being used, memory being used at the time of the lock-up, so that hopefully you can get a useful answer.

  • The computer is a Quad Core AMD with 4G ram winning Windows XP SP3. The reverbs I tried include Roomworks and Garritan Ambience. VE reports that I hqave 900 MB ram free. Mark

  • Hello Mark!

It might well be, that RAM is the reason for the crash. With Windows XP 32 bit every application can take 2 GB at maximum.
Did you load the reverb inside Vienna Ensemble or directly in Sibelius?
Please try once again and leave your Task Manager opened. Take a look at the RAM amount the Vienna Ensemble process is taking. If it rises to 2 GB, you are overloading your RAM.

Btw. There is a way to use up to 3GB RAM with one application under Windows XP 32. It's called 3GB switch. See cm's entry in this thread:

  • Total RAM: 240688 Available: 95M Cache 1027 Sib6 118,888K Commit Charge 2369M/5211M. I have already ordered Windows 7 64-bit. Will not get it till the end of the month. Mark

  • The problem, as ststed here, was that I was running out of memory. I edited the boot.ini file as suggested in the thread given by Andi and now it works again. So now I have a large orchestra setup WITH reverb. Perhaps I can hold off on getting Windows 7. After all, if it ain't broken, don't fix it. But I do wonder what I have lost. There is not a free lunch, I must have lost something by setting the 3GB switch. Mark
