  • Just a thought....

I was made aware of a site.... which I will not share here.... that has literally all of the content of VSL and much more available for nuttin. For what it's worth, I do not have a lot of programs/samples I would love to have at my disposal, nothing on my Mac's is warez or cracked, every bit is payed for, literally. However, companies such as VSL and all the others of course have to pay funds to protect their software offers, which in return, I/we as a customer will pay. Now, I know, this seems to be an old discussion, but I really wonder, what is the point if literally none of the packages available have a protection worth mentioning. It is a joke to me, companies are paying/deducting, and customers are burdened with the results, the latter are not exisiting as there is not a single package I could not find as an illegal copy. IN other words, it is all out there! The entire Cube is availabe in the right circles and everything else that is actually on the market. I get around the block quite a bit, and trust me, I have seen a great many production environments LOADED with warez. So from your yadayada TV production to the latest blockbuster, chances are, it was produced with a certain % of illegal software usage. Why am I posting this in the first place? Sure, it is frustrating to pay big bugs.... ahem, big bucks... for the stuff I am using, and at the same time observing pro setups with everything on the planet at their disposal, having licensed 30% -40% at the most. Not sure what the solution is, but as far as I am concerned, I made a decision on not using any cracked shit at all, and all of my Mac's have nuttin but payed stuff on it. Does that give me any advantage? No, it does not, on the contrary, I just can not afford to stay on top of everything that would be needed in my world every six months or so. Then again, you have companies with, excuse my bluntness, salami tactics such as VSL, or procrastinators such as Steinberg, ________ fill in the rest of the bunch, hence to a degree I can understand the attitude of using illegal obtained software, but and this is important, it is disasterous to the very industry we all make a living from. I am too tired and drunk to finish my thoughts tonight..... Just another thought, the crap that we are bombarded with on all levels of media considered as music, it is ridiculous in my ears/eyes. CD sales of classics is where? In the 5% region, if at all. Painting by numbers, today has it's equivalent in tools available to construct arrangements with pre fab loops and effects. Music was always a mirror of it's time, social, economical and political context, and as such, I am really worried, seriously. On a positive note, which seems rather difficult to find these days, thanks for all the hard work you folks at VSL come up with. Best wishes and sorry for the late night rant.... • Yes, tons of Orchestral Cubes on torrent sites.

Why? Because all of them are the old orchestral cubes in giga/exs format  (first/pro edition) which simply were not content protected.

Gigastudio and EXS didn't offer any sample content protection.

Without switching to a copy protected system and a custom player format in 2006 it would have been impossible to proceed with our sample content and software developement.

    That's a fact.

    best

  • Hello Maestro! :o) < where="" is="" my="" aspirin?=""> Yes, I do not doubt this for a second considering the massive investments you guys must have undertaken. My attitude towards this may appear stupid to some people, but I take pride in the fact that I have only payed goods on my Mac's. You would not believe how often I am asked stuff like.... " WOW, did you see this, wanna copy?".... Sometimes I wonder how really small companies that produce industry standard excellence, such as Eric's Spectrasonics manage it. Ok there are tons of people buying his products, no doubt, but I bet my bottom dollar, the percentage of people not having dished out and using it is even higher, much higher probably. Ah well, the discssion is as old as computers. This whole thing just came up because yesterday I made a crucial decision to "file for divorce" from Steinberg, and transfered my Cubase License to a friend. Speaking to bunch of people before that, asking about Logic and my decision to switch to Logic, I was offered the whole package from folks who can suck everything on the planet from some dodgy russian sites. I bought it at dv24 my UK dealer yesterday. Call me naiv, but there are some people out there who studied computer science or similiar, and now are coding programs, having a wife and children to support. ....Ah well.... The world is a nuthouse, looking at the rip off the banks did on a global scale, no wonder people's ethic is down the drain.... Best wishes- Georg

I guess you could say i was a loud voice against that move because it meant i wouldn't be able to use my samples in the sampler of my choice.  I now understand why VSL went that way.

  • I don't understand this attitude of "call me a moron but everything I own is legal..." etc. Everything I own is legal and the VSL board of directors know how much I have spent and what I have licensed over the years, even though I also was offered everything for free by an acquaintance. I don't expect a "bravo!" for this, in the same way I don't expect congratulations for not breaking into peoples' homes and stealing their valuables, because it is the very same thing! The whole thing started with Microsoft turning a blind eye to (or even encouraging) people using pirate copies of Office in the '80s, losing money, but becoming a monopoly in the long run as petty, double standard thieves, oh I'm sorry, regular people I meant..., happily shared stolen software (games, whatever) with their fellow upstanding citizens, with the sub-moronic excuse that companies make a lot of money and they can afford to lose a few hundred thousand $$. They never stopped to examine the principle of what they were doing, with the inexorable result that a generation of new people EXPECT other people's toil and imagination for free, while they themselves want to be paid wages (with raises every so often) for whatever it is they are doing (grave-digging, public toilet cleaning, business consulting, etc.).

However, to feel strange and stupid for doing the right thing, simply because one does not belong in the majority (perennial flock mentality), that's just too rich!

Sorry to hear that VSL doesn't reach  "industry standard excellence", according to your criteria. But anyway - rest assured that Spectrasonics isn't a small company compared to us. 😊

  • Dietz, No no, not sure why, but you got that wrong. However, sorry for the misunderstanding. Not many companies are on such a high standard, and for sure VSL and Spectrasonics are in line here as far as I am concerned. Cheers Georg

  • generally i'm under the impression the amount of VSL sample library (the legacy stuff) floating around on torrents, newsgroups, rapidshare, ect is significantly less than it has been a few years ago ...

i've not been able so far to find any Vienna Instruments but maybe i just didn't join the right IRC channel :P

considering the open source community didn't even manage to re-program the ancient performance tool right, how will even some gifted hacker get the multi-dimensional VI to work properly?

cracking an app might be fun, but understanding vienna instruments is hard work ...
