  • A couple of questions regarding Elements and Strings

    Hello,

There is a demo song on the Elements page by Bill Brown called Ambient 1. At just over half way through the song there is a very fast string run and then the sound of a very haunting percussive instrument. I assume it is in the Elements library and may be the lithophone? I'm hoping this is an instrument that can be downloaded separately.

Also, I own East West's Gold library and it has a patch for 18 violins called "marcato long" I have used it a lot for faster string lines. It has a quick attack but seems to hold a little longer than a typical staccato patch. Does VSL have a patch like this?  I own VSL SE, VSL SE Extended and Appasionatta Strings and Appasionatta Strings Extended. While the staccatos in Appasionatta are nice they do not hold very long. Does VSL have a patch like this in any of their libs?

I am not well versed in the terminolgy of the orchestra so maybe I have a patch close to this in one of my VSL libs already? I am just looking for a patch to layer behind the percussiveness of a staccato but still "breath" a bit of "space" into the sound. (hope that makes sense!)

    All the very best,

    Darren

    Hello Darren

The articulations normally have the following names in the VSL-Libraries:

    • staccato short,
    • staccato (long), > instruments  with a short staccato version have the addition "long" with the normal staccato.
    • détaché short (ca. 0,3s) for strings, portato short for wind instruments
    • détaché (long) (ca. 0,5s) for strings, portato (long) for wind instrumenets
    • portato long (ca. 1s) with release samples  (Brass instruments)
    • diminuendo 1,5s / 2s / 3s/ 4s/ 5s/ 6s/
    • sustain

All these articulations often exist with or without vibrato > it depends on the Library

I believe you should  find portato/détaché short versions within your libraries.

  •  Thank You Beat. You are always so helpful. Any idea on the instrument in the Elements demo?

  • Hello Darren

    Unfortunately I don't own the "Element-Library".

I suggest to ask Bill Brown  > http://billbrownmusic.com/index.htm
