  • logic 5 platinum on pc

hi there! i use the latest logic version running on pc (logic platinum) with 1 gb ram. i just bought the vsl upright bass and i want to add another gb ram to my pc. but it seems that this version of logic is a little bit to old or something. with 2 gb ram logic doesn`t work anymore. i am thinking of changing my sequencer to sonar, but i like working with logic. so is there anyone who can remember having the same problem? or can give me a tip which sequencer i should check out? (i have tried cubase but for me after using logic over the years cubase is not the right thing) thanks, marcus

  •  I am afraid your observation is correct:

Logic V5.5.1 (last version on PC) has a 1 GB memory barrier.

I found out myself a few years ago and have since switched to Cubase 4.5.2.

It's very annoying being forced to learn your way in a new sequencer.

But really, it didn't take me very long.

    I can recommend Cubase.

    Best regards,

    Henrik

  • Hi Marcus

If you want to produce music with samples you need to know that a lot of things are involved with.

Soundcard, PC, RAM, Software, Drivers etc.

A good advice is, to work with more or less new products.

Missing drivers, a slow handling of the RAM and all these things can destroy the pleasure of making music with old systems.

So before you make new investments check out whether you only need more RAM or a new PC.

Even if you have 2GB RAM - that's  the absolute minimum (not really enough).

    Below: You see  the...

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS for using the Vienna Instrument

    • PC Intel/AMD with Windows XP/VISTA/7 32 and 64 bit versions (Core 2 Duo/Xeon recommended) or
    • Apple G4 (G5 or Intel Core 2 Duo/Xeon processor recommended) with Mac OS X 10.4 or higher

    • 1 GB RAM (2 GB or more recommended)
    • Fast separate hard drive with 82.0 GB free space for Standard and Extended Library

  • yes, a new pc would be the best, but i am a student and it will take me some time to have the money for a good system. but it`s good to know that i was correct and i have to change the sequencer. maybe i`ll take a look at this version of cubase. the one i know is a little older. thanks, marcus

  •  Marcus, btw.:

To get the most out of your investment in Logic, you have another option which I forgot to mention yesterday:

Use Plogue Bidule to host your VST instruments, and connect Bidule to Logic via ReWire.

This is very easy to set up and works fine.

    Advantage:

    - You can sidestep the 1 GB memory limit in Logic V5.5.1. Only the sequencer data is stored in Logic; all VSTi is loaded into Bidule's memory space. I believe you can even start up multiple Bidule's which will then have their own memory space. What this means, basically, as I understand it, is that you can utilise all the RAM you want on your computer. I tried Bidule for the first time a few days ago and it worked very well.

    - You can download and try out the full version of Bidule for free from the company's homepage.

    - If you find out you want to purchase Bidule, it is very cheap - as I recall it's something like 60 Euros.

    Disadvantages:

    - Everything in your project is not saved in the same folder. Thus you have to backup both the Logic sequencer song, as well as the Bidule template.

    - You have to set up ReWire between Logic and Bidule every time you want to make music - instead of just loading Logic.

Hope this made sense and was useful to you.

    Best regards,

    Henrik

  •  Why not try Vienna Ensemble 2? it's free, and uses memory outside of your sequencer.

    DG

  • +1 for VE2 - it uses memory space outside the sequencer. Seems like the easiest solution (if it works)...

  • thanks hendrik and the others, i have tried your solutions, but for me to keep a good workflow the best solution is changing the sequencer. bidule is a very nice tool. thanks for the tipp! best regards, marcus

  •  You're welcome! Before making a big purchase for a new sequencer, you could try Reaper:

    http://www.reaper.fm/

It is only $60 and quite popular.

  • hendrik, thank you very much! reaper is great and the best solution for people having no money in their pockets like me ;)
