  • Sibelius and multiple instances of VE

My apologies if the answer to my question can be found somewhere else on this forum. I could not find it...

I'm on Mac OS 10.5.8 (Mac Pro 8-core 2x2.8GHz with 10GB RAM), running Sibelius 6 with VSE+ and the latest version of both Sibelius and the Vienna Ensemble. I've got quite a few instruments in my Playback Devices, so I need to launch three instances of the VE plugin (one for the strings, one for the winds and one for the brass and percussion), each instance having a VSL Convolution Reverb of the VSL Suite on its Master Bus.
However, the three instances of the plugin open in the same VE program, which results in the program reaching almost 3GB of Real Memory and 4GB of Virtual Memory, and using over 80% (of one core) even when the playback has stopped.
Then, it seems that I cannot do anything anymore with the Vienna Ensemble, or it crashes. I can't add an instrument, I can't minimize it in the dock, I can't hide it... Everytime it crashes.
On the other hand, if I start a new project that needs less resources, I do not meet any problem.

Does anyone have a clue on what is going on and how I could fix this problem? Is there a way to launch every instance of the VE plugin in a different VE program, so that each one uses far less that 4GB RAM and 80% CPU?

  • Hello Denis!

Vienna Ensemble for Mac is only one 32 bit application, even if you open more instances of the plugin. You can't use more than ca. 3 GB RAM with it. Did you take a look at Vienna Ensemble PRO? Besides being 64 bit, there are some other cool features.

You will find more about it here:

  • Ok, so now I understand better what it is all about.
One quick question: I don't plan to upgrade to Snow Leopard very soon as my system seems pretty stable as it is. Would VE Pro address my issues (RAM and CPU) even if I'm running OS 10.5.8? I don't want to end up being able to load loads of instruments, but being limited to the use of only one core.

  • VE Pro works with Mac OS 10.5 or higher and will surely solve your RAM problem. Probably also the CPU problem, but I can't guarantee that, because that may have various reasons depending on settings and programs running on your machine.
