  • Automating Tracks Within VE Pro?

    Hello Forum,

Is there a way to record track automation within VE Pro? Right now I have VE Pro running within Logic 9. My set up is as follows: I set up a multi within the Logic environment, created the number of tracks I would be using within VE and then assigned an instrument track to be the VE master. I opened an instance of VE and created and assigned each instrument within VE to correspond with the Logic setup. I can only have the MIDI ports in VE set to be on MIDI port 1 while having each instrument assigned to a different MIDI channel. When I try to use the hyperdraw or the faders in Logic, all of the other VI instruments are effected. The only way I can see to be able to record individual track automation is to do it within VE Pro. Any suggestions?

    As always, thanks.

    Chumley

  • Chumley, assign the sounds to inputs in VE Pro and create corresponding auxes in Logic to receive them. Then automate the auxes.

  • Hi Chumley,

You can automate Volume and Pan for each channel of VE Pro directly in Logic - I sent you an email with a screenshot!

  • Hey Jay,

Thanks, that works and does the trick. I've also been toying around with the other idea below.

  • Hey Marnix,

Thanks for the help. This idea works as well as the one from Jay and I like it because it's a bit simpler setup. I don't have to add all of the aux tracks.

Thanks for the snapshot. It was most helpful.

  • Marnix,

By automating volumes and pans directly in logic as per your suggestion, I am having a slight issue with sound quality. Whenever the sequence gets to the automated event, there is a weird digital sound accompanied by some crackling and popping. I'm not using very many samples and I've turned the buffer size all the way to 1024 and it still happens. Have you experienced this at all and if so do you have any suggestions on how to fix it?

    Thanks again,

    Chumley

  • Hi Chumley,

Hmm, no, I havenĀ“t experienced this here...

Which version of VE Pro are you using?

And could you please give me a little more information about your system, i.e. CPU, RAM, Audio Interface and drivers...etc...

If you want to, you can send me the zipped Logic song to m.veenenbos@vsl.co.at and I will see if I can somehow reproduce the problem!

  • Automating  VEPĀ“s Volume and Pan in Logic is not of much use if you cannot automate the sends as well.

Automating the Aux returns from VEP in Logic works in this regard but I have trouble recording fades while I play Vienna Instruments in VEP. My MC Control / MC Mix insist of *only* displaying Auxes *or* instruments at a time.

Does anybody have a fix for this? Or how do you ride the volume while playing a VI?

Also, its not ideal to have two tracks necessary in LogicĀ“s arrange page for every VEP channel.

Bit of a downer, this snag is standing in the way of a great workflow......

    All the best,

    Jochen

  • Hi Josch,

You can automate sends 1-4 directly in Logic, exactly as the Volume and Pan!

I know that this two-track-dilemma is a drag, but unfortunately this is the way Logic works...

  • Hi Marnix,

I am using VE Pro Version 4.0.4536.

    My system is:

    4 x 2.5 GHz PPC G5

    16 GB DDR2 SDRAM

Audio Interface is a Digi 002

    Drivers are Digi Core Audio

Thanks Marnix. I'll see about getting you the zipped file of the track

    Best,

    Chumley

  • Marnix,

I figured out what the problem is. I had the latency buffer on the server interface set on 2. I set it to none and it seems to have fixed the problem.

    Thanks again!

  • Since most of the libraries I use have modwheel patches that control both volume and timbre or volume and vibrato, I automate volume by riding cc1 or sometimes cc11 with an Expression pedal in real time and use Logic's Track based volume as a kind of trim.
