  • MIR and Cubase 5 running together on one computer

Hi, today I installed the MIR demo and have configured most of the settings correctly.  I had to download LoopB to transmit midi from cubase to MIR, and this works perfectly, not to mention I can run 6 instruments in portamento with less than 5% of my CPU usage (much better than previous posts mentioned about working with Vista 64 on a Mac pro nehalem 2.26 16gb--so this setup is perfectly legit for large projects.)

I was wondering how I get audio back into the DAW from MIR... or just how I go about bouncing final mixes with this setup--this is the only thing keeping me from bankrupting myself!  Please respond soon!

  • Hi Justin,

thanks for your interest in MIR. Glad to hear that you get reasonable amounts of CPU consumption.

Due to the fact that MIR was actually designed as stand-alone "mixing console", it may be a bit tricky to do audio with another program on the same machine at the same time. As long as your ASIO-hardware is able to work in multi-client mode (like most RME hardware, for example), it may be sufficient to exclude certain audio I/Os from the used of one program, thus reserving it for the other; a simple audio loopback using a digital connection is then all you would need. - Some cards even support an internal loop-back mode.

If your existing audio hardware doesn't support multi-client modes, then the obvious solution will be to get some simple additional ASIO audio hardware (for example a USB device with digital stereo I/O) for MIR, slaving it to your main device.

Could you tell us what is loopB? (google didnt find anything) A software that routes midi to MIR would be essential for me, rather than doing it with a hardware midi interface.

Concernig the loopback, I guess you could try digital out from MIR to digital in into Cubase. If you have a RME interface it ca be done within total mix.

Experts please put me right if this is not correct.

  • Hi, thanks for your help. I've been trying to use optical cables to run signal from the interface into my mac pro and the other way around, but no luck.  I'm better with Logic anyhow.. so I'm about to get my macbook pro to reinstall leopard so I can use the 003.  My setup will be mac pro with MIR using an m-audio firewire 410 and a macbook pro with digi 003 running logic.  Can you tell me how I route the signals?  I imagine just midi out from the 003 into the 410 and audio back from 410 into the 003?  Would an optical cable be the way to go for getting audio back (both intrfaces have spdif an optical spdif)

Lastly, I do think I will be making a huge investment in the Cube or even more, so can you tell me if the CPU load will be similar to what I'm running now?  I'm using the solo strings and the epic horns download instruments within MIR and I'm getting 3-6% cpu usage with all of them together.  Will all of the other instruments be identical in cpu usage (I know this is probably a question of whether a note is sustained or not, but just double-checking)?  And do the other halls not included in the demo eat up RAM and CPU differently, or are they all pretty much the same? The Mozartsaal loads so fast and works so well.. will this be different in the final product?

As mentioned above - MIR's CPU-consuption mostly depends on the number of playing instruments, and the number of output channels (a surround setup will tax your system more than plain stereo). RAM requirements and loading time differ a lot from venue to venue, depending on the length of the reverb (ranging from 0.5 to almost 10 seconds) and the number of individual IRs within one Multi Impulse Response set (some hundred to more than thounsand). Therefore, huge venues offer a "Stage Only"-version, without IR-positions off stage (e.g. in the back of the room).

The Mozartsaal offered as part of the MIR-demo is a good "typical" example. Expect longer and shorter loading times from other venues, but all in the same ballpark.

  •  Hi Dietz, thanks again for helping me so thoroughly.  So instead of midi cables, I can use midi over lan to send signals right (is this as effective?)?  As for the optical cables.. that might be a no go since my firewire 410 doesn't have wordclock, but the 003 does--so I should go with the orange input spdif then?

Yes, I would prefer this over the optical connection.

  • ugh, the midi doesn't work for some reason when transfering from my digi 003 to the 410.  I might just go with the cubase route, because I know how to get the midi and playback to work... now I looked into a few cards for MIR: here's the cheapest with spdif, is this a good option? TASCAM US-144

One strange thing.. I have loopbe1 and channel 1 set to the midi input on my VI in MIR coming from a midi track in Cubase 5 set to loopbe1 channel 1 output and my keyboard as the midi input (i've tried others, this keeps a midi loop from occuring.)  I can't record or perform any parts into Cubase (when I do, the part highlighting where I record vanishes when I stop recording), I have to manually enter the parts in for the signal to transfer over.  There's probably an obvious solution to this, do you know of one?
