I have posted some screenshots here in the past of my work but as of recently we have decided to give it all a name: The Open Octave Project.
We have a website outlining our progress:
The Open Octave Project is not an application but more a pipeline consisting of the best of breed applications running under linux to provide an optimal setup for orchestral composing. We have coded some applications for it and worked with the developers of other applications. The whole pipeline is started from one script and the script keeps the studio running even if it crashes.
Because I purchesed licenses for VSL products it was the first thing I started to support. I have the entire pro edition mapped between applications and running very nice.
I have configured and running the following:
- AMD quad core
- 8GB RAM
- 2x 80GB SSD drives dedicated to samples and sample frequency usage
- VSL Pro Edition
- Project SAMS True Strike 1 and 2
- Gigapiano
With this setup we are able torun 129 tracks all accessible realtime with the ability to easily change to any articulation of the instrument track on the fly. (this is outlined in the videos below).
All that said I have my entire orchestra loaded in realtime with a highly configurable convolution reverb engine that takes up very little cpu and sounds awesome!
There is video technical overviews at youtube:

part 2
part 3
Enjoy!
