Setup Network between Vista 64 and Mac OS X 10.6 ????

Now that VE Pro is here and I have my new Mac Pro I am wondering how to setup a network between these systems?

It seems to be a little more complicated...Maybe VSL can post how to do it?

basically it is easy, though if you're a network newbie i'd recommend to get some prerequisites:

- since many computers have more than one network interface name them self-explaining and mark them respectively near the connector (eg. external, audio fot the network name)

- make some little drawing how you like to connect what to what (including the adapter naming)

- check out if you have a router (providing internet to your network) which distributes IPs to your network, note down the range

- remember network utility allows some simple trouble shooting

- double check if you have some nifty firewall or antivirus applications (eg. zone alarm) giving you headache

- remember you need to have gigabit (either two gigabit ports are direcly connected with a cable or your switch must be gigabit, preferrably not some cheap crap)

basic rules:

every network adapter on a computer needs to reside in it's own IP range (say 192.168.1.x vs. 192.168.2.y)

only one router (gateway) entry must exist per computer - the used IP must be within the IP range of the respective network card and DNS server entries should exist

2 computers connected must reside within the same IP range, otherwise they won't communicate properly

I have setup networks before on PCs and I also got VE3 running between a XP 32 PC and my newer Vista 64 PC with no problem for half a year now.

Now I have a new Mac Pro with Snow Leopard and I want to keep using my Vista PC with Vienna Instruments (and PLAY...)

The two machines are connected directly with an ethernet cable, and I already tried to type smb://ip adress (on the mac) but no connection happens.

I plugged my XP PC to the Mac before that and the connection was instantly there, but veeeery slow.

So I'm thinking that there are some things to consider especially with the combination of OSs (Vista Ultimate 64-Bit and Mac OS X 10.6) Certain forum entries suggest to mess with secpol.msc on Vista and with "sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0" on the mac ... you see it's a science.

I'll check out the links next week as I'm not at home over the weekend.

I know it's a lot to ask but maybe it's possible to provide a step by step instruction?

 vista + windows 7 + filesharing over smb: make sure the network you are connecting is configured as private, otherwise filesharing and network discovery ist turned off.

or enable filesharing for the respective network explicitly (network & sharing center) - though VE3 / VEPRO does not rely on the smb protocol.

for better troubleshooting enable ICMP v4 Ping in the firewall of vista to allow replies to pings sent from your mac.
