  • Overclocking for MIR

    Hi

Can I just use this bundle plus and extra 6GB RAM

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-003-OB&groupid=43&catid=339&subcat=

    Instead of having to purchase

Just the first bundle works out around £700 and the 2nd list at £1400!!! Overclockers say that there is no difference and I will get the same performance from both. Is this true?

Am I going to have any problems with MIR using the overclocked bundle compared to the 975 version? Should I just pay the extra money and get the seperate components?

    Thanks!!!

  • hmmm, overclocking a 2.66 to 3.8 might not be the best of all possible ideas ...

AFAIK the i7 920 is also limited to 1066 memory bus speed, the lowest capable of 1333 is the i7 950.

we have XEON 2.66 overclocked to 2.93 which runs stable though ...

  • Hi Christian,

Thanks for your reply. They seem to be experts at selling overclocked systems. If I buy the bundle they fit all the components, including the extra 6GB RAM and ship it to you ready to go.

They said that the bundle is just as good as me buying the 975 i7 set. They have no reason to say that as I am spending £700 less by going for the bundle. But I wanted VSL views of it.

Do you think that the bundle is as good as the 975 i7 set? Is it worth me spending the extra £700? Do you feel there will be much of a performance difference?

  • well, the i7 and XEON 5500 processors have some built-in overclocking and throtteling feature (if temperature of proc allows and load is high they step up, if load is low or temperature is too high they throttle), but AFAIK this is limited to 1 or 2 steps of 133 MHz.

sorry, i really cannot comment on the i7 920 and especially not on overclocking them - the lowest one about which i have reports is the i7 950 overclocked to 3.2 GHz on a gigabyte EX58-UD4P board.

  • Hi Christian,

Decided not to risk it and ordered the seperate components above. I think I should be ok with these - i7 975 3.33Ghz, 12GB RAM. My current template loaded into MIR, including OS RAM and MIR IR's uses 11.09GB so I have a little bit to spare. Do you think I will be ok with 0.91GB spare and the i7 975 chip?

    Thanks!
