  • Applause

    Just an idea.
Herb, are you planning to include any applause sounds in future releases? It would be great.
Also, some audience noise such as coughing, whispering, blowing one's nose, adjusting seats etc. would greatly improve realism.
    What do you think?

  • I think some movement and breathing would be nice to add some realism but how many people need applause? [:D] You can probably find some applause samples free on the net i'm sure.

    I think your'e a mental case.

  • Coriolan,

I'm sorry but I cannot applaud your idea for realism. [:D]

Actually I know there are libraries providing samples like that. In fact I think I received something like that not long ago from Garritan (in an upgrade to GOS.)

More noise on an audio track? I sure don't need it. My analog board does just fine.

    (Coriolan as in Napoleon?)

  • Actually, I don't think Coriolan's a mental case, but I think it's easy to find sfx to build an audience track. You only want that for a simulated live recording, of course.

I've actually used an open mic when recording myself playing a wind controller (EWI). The VL1 synth has breath built into its sounds (with some interesting parameters to change the breath quality!), but it's breathing *out* noise. Breathing in noise and finger noise (subtle as it is) adds just a hair of realism.

But that's for a close-up solo sound, not the hall perspective you're simulating with an orchestra.

Sorry Coriolan. Nick's right. I was being naughty. Blowing noses though?

    all the best

  • To me (just to me) a recording of a symphonic work with noises from the audience between movements and a thunder of applause after the performance is more valuable than a perfectly sounding studio recording.
So, I was thinking: "This library has everything already. Or does it?..." [*-)]
That is why asked about noise samples which, I thought, might be used in a simulation to add realism.

Now I'm thinking. If Herb was to add such noises, he would probably record blowing nose with and without vibrato; people adjusting seats going up (V) and down (n); coughing and muted coughing; applause with 16 dynamic layers; words "bravo" and "bravissimo" shouted by the best public of Vienna (recorded on the special Silent Stage [[[[:D]]]] , 24/96 of course...

    Sorry, could not resist.

  • I think GOS' ambience helps for realism. I used it on this cue (using VSL) and I thought the 'noise' complimented it (mostly on beginning and end quiet sections).

It is easy to go overboard with it so season to taste. I just wish I had "ambience" with the Performance Tool [:D]
