  • Sleep mode power consumption for a MIR system

    Hi

    Im preparing to build a new system for the MIR based on the XEON 5500 series.

    I'm not very familiar with the options for sleep mode/power management etc - but would be very interested in getting my system to hypernate.

    So I can let the computer stay switched on with the whole orchestra loaded - ready to use with a wake-up call.

    Anybody who has experience with the Supermicro/Asus/Intel dual CPU 5520 boards in this respect?

    Also is there any difference in the power management capabilities of the CPU's - say E5520 as compared to a X5570 or W5580?

    And finally: Any idea of the power consumption for a dual XEON 24 GB system in sleep mode?

    Sleep or hibernate?  They are two different modes.   Sleep is low power and retains data in memory, so quicker to reboot.  Not sure how low power though.

    Hibernate probably won't give you much of an advantage as it has to load everything into memory off disk so if you have 24GB of samples loaded it has to transfer  24gb of data back into memory - which is going to take some time to do....

    Can't answer your detailed questions about types of chip though, but my impression is that it's the O/S that dictates the benefits during Sleep and Hibernate is just transfering data to disk and in effect shutting down....

    Its the sleep mode I'm interested in as this preserves the memory as well. The OS can handle switch off times etc, but the CPU's needs to have the capability to reduce their clock speeds to a bare minimum and the RAM needs their refresh pulses ( via the chipset I presume ) - and I was just wondering what to look out for when buying the Motherboard and CPU's.

  • the amount of energy consumption will highly depend on your PSU (they work less efficient with little load) - my estimation would be ~100 watts in S3 mode for a 5520 board with 2 processors

    A 100 W is a bit more than I had hoped for. I seem to remember something about a power conserving PSU as well (although you offcause cannot lower the inputside )?

    Do you know if there is any differences btw getting a Supermicro, Intel etc Mobo regarding power management capabilities?

    Any differencies in using overclocked E5520 and a W5588?

    ( by the way how is your overclocking test coming along? )
