MIR and Sibelius

I have just bought MIR and now I am interested in buying Sibelius 6,

I had a look at the Sibelius and Vienna Ensemble  tutorial video

May I use MIR instead of Vienna Ensemble to get the same results?

Do you plan on running MIR and Sibelius on the same machine?  If so I hope it's insanely powerful because Sibelius is a CPU hog and doesn't allow you to freeze tracks to conserve CPU usage.

From everything I see and hear you will get better results using MIR but you will need the horsepower to do it, or a dedicated machine with a dedicated audio interface.

If I owned what you say you own, I would be using MIR, not VE.  Even if that meant I had to buy another second cheap machine to run Sibelius on.

The problem is, with vienna Ensemble I could open more than one Vienna istance for more than 16 instruments.

But with MIR that is absurd because all the instruments must be on one and only stage. So, is this the same with MIR?:

I run MIR with sibelius and it works just fine with my setup. However I run MIR and sibelius on separate PC's and communicate using MOL.

Looking at the specs for your computer I recommend you buy yourself an intel I7 PC, either a Intel Quad-Core i7-920 or something more powerful like a Dual Intel Quad core XEON 5520, depending on your budget. I don't think MIR will work under a Mac OS. MIR is such a processor hungry beast I wouldn't even want to try running Sibelius and MIR on the same machine, let alone try running multiple instances of MIR. Just loading up one hall profile takes up to about 4 GB of memory.

I've had no problems using the Sibelius soundsets I downloaded from the VSL website with MIR.

Thank you Chris for your replay, but I have to say that I know MIR very well as I was a Beta Tester just like you.

I don't need any Intel I7 as MIR runs very well on my PC, I only have to set the latency high, but it doesn't bother me for now.

My answer is not about MIR but about Sibelius that I don't know as I am a Finale user.

So, is it possible with Sibelius 6 to open just one and only MIR istance with more than 16 instruments?

I have never tried opening MIR as an instance within Sibelius. I use Midi over Lan software to send my midi signals to MIR. I've created about 5 virtual midi ports via MOL. Each port has 16 virtual midi channels. Then within Sibelius I've assigned a different sound set to each port. For example I've assigned the sound set VE Woodwinds + Brass to the virtual port 1 and solo strings to port 2 etc..

I'm thinking of going down the two PC route. I know i will need Windows 7 64bit for the MIR machine but can I continue to use XP 32 bit for the Sibelius machine?

Also did you build your own machine or did you use a specialist company to build the DAW?

Sorry, also do I need a soundcard for each machine?

You can definitely use 32-bit with Sibelius with no issues.  All you are sending out is midi information to the MIR machine.  After that the MIR machine needs somewhere to go with the processed audio signals (DAC, DAW, etc).  64-bit will only really benefit you more on the MIR machine.  Besides, is Sibelius even 64-bit?

Hi Dave,

You should be fine running Sibelius on XP 32bit, thats what I use. I purchased my MIR computer via CyberPowerSystems and then upgraded the memory from 4Gb to 12Gb and installed an RME Hammerfall DSP soundcard myself.  I also purchased my DAW/ Sibelius machine via CyberPowerSystems a year earlier, the specs are: AMD Athelon 64 Dual Core Processor 5200+, 2Gb of ram. 

CyberPowerSystems are not a specialist company for buildng DAWs, but I have found their pricess to be very reasonable.

I have installed an RME Hammerfall DSP soundcard in my DAW/Sibelius machine also and I route the audio via ADAT from my MIR machine back to my DAW computer and record the results within Cubase. I've also installed an RME analogue audio out expansion card for my Hammerfall card in my DAW machine so I can hear the results via my Monitors.

You will certainly need a soundcard in your MIR machine, I'd recommend one of the RME ASIO sound cards. MIR does not stream audio via the network like Vienna Ensemble 3.

I've had some good results with this setup

I use cubase to master my music, using various VST plugins including the Vienna Suite.

Hi Jim!

You don't need MIDI over LAN with Vienna Ensemble Pro.
