  • Interesting Dynamics Experiment Att: Andi

Greetings All, I have been using the Velocity X-Fade fader in Sibelius instead of the Expression fader for a couple of weeks now. But as Andi mentioned, the overall dynamic range of the instrument is decreased. As an experiment I tried using both the Velocity X-Fade and the Expression controllers set to CC11. This sounded pretty realistic to me, especially on the flute. I was just wondering if anyone else had try this, and if there is a reason why I perhaps shouldn't do this. Thanks. -Peter Scartabello

  • Hello Peter!

If you like it this way, use it this way. In this case there is no right or wrong. For me personally the dynamics are a bit exaggerated, when CC11 controls Expression and Velocity XFade.

    Best,
    Andi

  • Hey Peter,

I personally love using both.  Velocity-xfade is great but sometimes the end of notes can still be a little harsh, which using the expression controller really helps fixing.  Also sometimes you might want to retain the particular timbre at a specific dynamic level, yet changing the actual volume, which the expression control would be perfect for.

My legato and sustain lines definitely sounded a lot more realistic since I started using both.
