  • Hi Beat,

No Luck on the Mac - Intel.  Loaded the preset into:

    Library/Application Support/VSL/VSL Convolution Reverb/vci/VSL 3-Depth

At first the IR's were grayed out when I went to open them.  I noticed that the VSL Factory IR's had an extension of .vci.  I changed the filename to include the .vci extension and then the IR's were available but when I went to open them I received the following message: "Could not open impulse response".

  • By the way Beat,

I did first try putting them into the Shared Items directory receiving the same results......

    Hi Chuck

    Where to install the presets?

    In the Suite-Manual is written...

    OS X: [Macintosh HD]/Shared Items/Vienna Suite Presets/[PluginName]

Maybe a VSL moderator can confirme here that we are able to exchange ViennaSuite-Presets between MAC and WIN.

    Thanks

    Best, Beat

  • Hi Beat,

Is it necessary to change the file extensions on these 3-Depth presets or just leave them as is? I've placed them in the following location below on my Vista machine, but VS just does not see them. Thanks!

    [user name]/AppData/Roaming/Vienna Suite Presets

  • Hi Jeff

I have the German version of Vista. Beside [username]/AppData/... I also have [username]/Anwendungsdaten/Vienna Suite Presets/VSL Convolution Reverb/...

My presets are stored in the last one.

My suggestion: Open your VSL Convolution Reverb and save a an own preset. Search then this preset within the [username] folders.

Once, you have found it copy all my depth presets in the same folder. The convolution reverb will show them when you press "Load".

    Hope that helps

    Beat

  • Beat,

I noticed on your webpage that you seem to work with three depths - one for Strings, Winds, and Brass, respectively.  I'm wondering what you do with Percussion.  I personally use a fourth depth for percussion.  Do you do this also, or do you adjust the reverb of each percussion instrument individually?  Just wondering.  Thanks.

  • Beat, thanks so much! I got it to work.

    Best, Jeff

    Hello Gary

I also work with 4 depths when I believe that it's necessary. But often I take the 3rd depth for percussion as well because I take the depths a bit too far. That means *Close" is a bit too close and "Far" is a bit too far. So I can't shift the percussion even farther away...[:)]

  • Thanks Beat.

Still, i cant find a way to install those Presets.

They are all been dragged to C:\Users\me\Vienna Ensemble\Plugin Presets\VSL Convolution Reverb x64 where my other saved presets are.

I needed to had a .FXP for them to show up for selection in the preset box inside Reverb x64 plug. But still i'm getting "Incompatible Preset file" error when i try to load them.

    What i'm i doing wrong?

    Y-

  • Hello Mr. Kaufmann and thanks for the gracious downloads.

I'm on a Mac 10.6.1. I've located the shared folder and confirmed that I can save Vienna Suite presets to that folder. When I drag one of your presets into that folder, Logic doesn't seem to see it.

The test presets I saved were text files. Yours come through as Unix executable files. Perhaps I am uninformed here. When I click on them, Terminal launches and I get the following error message:

    /VSL\ Convolution\ Reverb/BK\ Grosser\ Saal\ Close ; exit;

-bash: /Shared Items/Vienna Suite Presets/VSL Convolution Reverb/BK Grosser Saal Close: cannot execute binary file

    logout

    [Process completed]

Perhaps a VSL tech could advise us both as to the suitability of PC Vienna Suite presets in a Mac world. Thanks to anyone who can help.

  • Hello plowman, hello MACers

Thanks for your interessts in the suite-depth-presets. And sorry for the troubles you seem to have with them...

As you know, I'm not on a MAC. But I've sent my files to check out to Paul (VSL) - and I got a "OK, they work" back from him.

So there is a glimmer of hope.

To be sure that you have saved my files in the correct folder:

Open the convolution effect within your Host and save a preset of your own.

Just open my  zip-file and put the data-files (presets) into the same folder which contains yours as well.

That's all what I can say from my side.

If this doesn't help - yes we all have to wait and hope on help from the "creator(s) of the suite effects" [:)]

    Best

  • Hi beat,

Thanks a lot for your preset they are great ^.^ And for Mac user i can say it work i just did like beat said, i have save one preset i made in the convulation reverb and keep the name it give by default "New preset" then i have go  in finder and taped in shearch "New preset" then i have copy/past the files of Beat in the file is "New preset" and when you go in load section in your convulation reverb they all are there ^.^ If that can help for those that not working ^.^

    Thanks again Beat ^.^

  • Thanks to both Beat and Gilles.

I have loaded them successfully. The catch: these aren't impulses (that I knew), and they're *not* presets (that I didn't know). So they don't show up in Settings drop down. If you save a "New Preset" default file as a tracer (to discover the right path), and then drop Beat's files into that same folder, they still won't show up as a Setting. Settings, I have learned (the hard way, as I learn all things), are aupreset files. That's what shows up in the drop menu to the left of the Copy / Paste boxes.

BUT, if (as Gilles said) you open LOAD, which is just above the graphical window, to the right of Factory Presets, a-ha! There is found the work of our magnanimous friend, Mr. Kaufmann.

And "New Preset" will be there too.

The confusing part is, "New Preset" also appears in the aupreset drop down menu after it is saved, leading the user to think BK's work should be there too. I dragged BK's files into that folder, but they're not aupresets. So the Settings drop menu won't show them, even if they're in the folder.

I look forward to learning from this work as I have learned from all your contributions here, Beat. The examples you put on your site of Close, Mid, and Far were immediately helpful. Thanks again.

  • Heya plowman,

Glad you have can make it and i have can help you a bit ^.^

    And thanks again Beat ^.^

    Hi to all

Thanks for your praising words about the depth presets [:$].

    Two additions:

    1. For getting even closer distances: Reduce the value of "Decorr" down to 0...1%...2%

    2. I will be able to publish 3 whole "Orchestra Sets" of "Suite-Effect-Presets" soon... [:)]

    All the Best

  • Hi Beat,

I look forward to those as your presets are quite useful! Thaks for sharing them :).

  • Fantastic, Beat. Drop us a line here or on a new thread when you do. Also, when your tutorials come out in English, that would be good to know.

If time and interest allow, I'd value your musical description of "Decorr." I think it stands for "de-correlation." Err... good to know, but it doesn't help me much. I didn't know it could bring the instrument closer. A musical explanation would be helpful as to how you use it when your designing your virtual space.

    Hi plowman

Yes you are correct. DECORR stands for...

My explanation is between a musical and a technical one. OK?

The more you increase the Decorrelation the more you get an extensive reverb - specially with its fade out.

That's what I recognize when I'm listening to several "decorr-results".

Perhaps the VSL Suite Convolution Reverb does this with a sort of a built in stereo chorus effect  which is influencing the IR??

    Don't know really.

Further, on the one hand it seems not to be a linear effect but on the other hand the parameter shifter is linear.

So the most difference you get between 0% and around 10%

Decorr = 0% (normal Reverb without any special richness)

Decorr = 1% (suddenly much more richness with the reverb)

    Decorr = 2% (even more ...)

Now, a main parameter for adjusting the virtual distance:

The more wet a  signal the farther away it seems to be.

So: More DECORR enhance the feeling of more distance... which explains my upper proposal:

For even closer distances with my "3depth-presets" : Reduce the value of DECORR to 0%...2%

  • Decorrelation: -> [URL]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decorrelation[/URL]

It introduces a certain amout of randomness into the signal. Due to this processing, the signal components that "correlate" with each other are reduced (... this is what one could call the "mono-component"). The effect is that the preceived stereo width is enhanced, although while sacrificing natural positioning cues. Therefore, making clever use of the decorrellation envelope is crucial.

  • Beat, I did a fresh install to Windows 7 (I was using Vista previously) and realized that I didn't copy over the presets before I formatted the drive. After clicking on the link to get the presets again, it appears to be invalid. Do you still have these available for download? I found them quite useful and already had used them in some work.
