  • Sorry to ask more questions... but can't figure this one out...

    Hi all,

I've spent hours trying to figure this one out but can't seem to get to the bottom of it   [*-)]

My articulations in Vienna Ensemble and Sibelius work fine (I'm using VSL Special Edition with the Special Edition soundset), but for some reason when I use pizz, it sticks on pizz for the rest of the notes - even though I start a new articulation i.e portamento.

If I don't select pizz and just use portamento, the portamento works just fine - until I instruct it to play pizz, whereby it sticks on pizz again.

    Confused!

In the playback dictionary in Sibelius, I checked the box 'Until next sound ID change' for each of my articulations, so in theory everything should work.

Has anybody come across this problem before??

Thank you for any help - I hope this makes sense to someone!

  • Sometimes there are Sound ID problems with the Sibelius manuscript paper for string quartet. Normally it helps to create a new version of the problematic instrument, cut out the content of the old instrument and paste it into the new one. With Solo Strings please always make sure to use the Sibelius Solo String instruments (Solo Violin, Solo Viola, ...). The instruments Violin I, Violin 1, Viola, ... are for ensemble strings.

    I hope that helps.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Andi,

Thanks for your reply - however, this is happening not only just with solo string quartets, but with my orchestral strings in an orchestra set up.

Also my flute sticks on sforzato, and what is happening at the moment is that sometimes my orchestral strings swap portamento for detache and vice-versa

Its a bit of a mystery! [*-)]  I've tried creating a new instrument and pasting the notes back in, but the same problems happen.

Any other ideas?! I've double checked my playback dictionary and all is correct - and much of the time the articulations work.

    Best regards,

    Ian

  • Hello Ian!

Did you read the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual? There are many useful hints and there is also a troubleshooting section. You can find it at the following location:

  • Hi Andi, thanks again for your reply!

I've read the manual and tried all of the troubleshooting tips - but still no luck  [:(]

I'm going to unistall and reinstall Sibelius tonight and try all of the tips suggested in the 'Optimizing Sibelius Playback' manual again - I'll also test the soundset with version 5 as well before I upgrade to 5.2

After that - I guess I should contact Sibelius as I think you have done all you can at your end.

Out of interest, would going to Sibelius 6 help do you think? Or do the VSL soundsets only work for 5.2??

Thanks for all the help once again,

    Ian

  • Hi Ian!

There is no use in reinstalling Sibelius. Sibelius 5.0 and 5.1 will not work with the sound set you have.
If you are using Sibelius 5.2 instead of 5.2.5 I strongly recommend updating to Sibelius 5.2.5. In this version some playback issues have been solved.
According to Sibelius the playback system has not changed in Sibelius 6.

    Andi

  • Hey Andi - problem solved!

I went through everything again from the start and realised I'd made a few slight but fundamental errors that were the problem.

I had set sforzato to 'until next ID change' instead of 'until end of note' - I was expecting it to change when I put in a staccato or something, but it didn't. Works now though!

With my strings I also expected the ID to change automatically on the next , but I have now realised that I needed to also put in 'arco' when I wanted pizz to finish, and also 'ord.' after tremolos.

Errors on my part I'm affraid! Sorry to have got you trying to figure this out!

    [:$]

    All good now though!  [H]

    Thanks once again,

    Best regards,

    Ian
