  • Bosendorfer-velocity layers in Sibelius

    Greetings everyone,

is there any way of getting smoother changes in cresc. / dim., or have a larger dynamic range in general (ppp - pp - p - mp - mf - f - ff - fff), while using the Bosendrofer of VSL SE in Sibelius 5.2.5 and the 5.2 soundset?

As the velocity layers of the piano in SE are only 3 (0–55 ppp; 56–108 mp; 109–127 ff) and since I cannot use the velocity Xfade for the it, I get a quite harsh, non-realistic playback, dynamics-wise. Is there a way to "fool" Sibelius into streching this dynamic range?

    Any thoughts here, Andi?

    Best,

    Raoul

  • Sorry Raoul, but there are not more than 3 velocity layers and I don't know any way to trick Sibelius to get more layers.
If the piano is important for you, you might be interested in our upcoming Vienna Imperial.

  • Thank you for your quick reply, Andi.

I see your point there. But for the time being, I was thinking something in terms of software instead of hardware, although I have to admit that the Vienna Imperial has made quite an impression and I will be checking for fresh news to come, concerning it.

What if I would purchase the Bosendorfer Imperial, instead?  Would the 5.2 soundset, suffice for an orchestration including this piano and a full orchestra made up by SE instruments or would I need a seperate one (soundset) for the Bosendorfer? I read that it has 7 vel. layers; can you please specify in which dynamics do they correspond?

    Thanks in advance.

    Raoul

  • Hi Raoul!

The Vienna Imperial is a software piano. (The picture you see on the linked page is a prototype we built for the NAMM.) It will offer much more detail than any other software piano around (including our own Bösendorfer Imperial). It includes 100 velocity layers, una corda samples and different listener positions.
It can be played with the Special Edition sound set, though eventually I will make a sound set to switch to una corda and back with the "una corda" command.

The seven velocity layers at the Bösendorfer Imperial are mapped as follows:
    0-29: ppp
    30-49: pp
    50-64: p
    65-79: mp
    80-99: mf
    100-119: f
    120-127: ff

  • Thank you, Andi for clarifying, as well as for the info on the velocity layers.[;)]
