  • Orchestrating with Sibelius and Vienna in two part (Legato) Violin 1

Problem: Writing two voices or harmonic intervals in a single instrument like Violin 1 and needing Legato.

Obviously this creates a problem with legato as Vienna does not play Legato on two part writing in a single part. HOWEVER, it is regular common practice in a score to write two parts in say Violin 1. So, the question is, apart from making a whole new "Vienna mock-up/playback Score" where we have to split into 4 different violin parts (also then doubling the volume)  in addition to the regular publish ready score, how does one deal with this situation? Is there any solution?

I appreciate everyone's helpful suggestions btw.

    Thanks

    Lon

  • Hello Lon!

Our Performance Interval patches (legato, portamento, performance marcato) are monophonic due to the necessity of interval recognition. So if you write a slur (which triggers the legato patch), you are limited to one voice.

If you want to notate more voices in one staff with a slur, you can exclude the slur from playback and thus avoid switching to legato. To do so, select the slur and go to the Properties window/Playback. Uncheck the boxes for play on pass 1–8.

    Best wishes,

    Andi

  • Perhaps I can jump in on this as I'm about to forsake Finale and move to Sibelius and have a related question...

In Finale I can assign different MIDI channels to different layers. This allows me to access different plug-ins (VSL on layers 1+2 and IRCAM UVI library on 3+4). Can I do this in Sibelius 5 (or 6 at this stage I guess)? Or is there a way for the Sound ID's to trigger a specific device rather then just sending data to a fixed output channel?

    Thanks.

  • Unfortunately that's not possible with Sibelius.

    Best,
    Andi
