  • Vienna Ensemble Enhancement Request

I'm not sure about the rest of the VSL community, but I would like to see the following enhancements on a future release of VE.

    1.  A method to save a single channel's setup in VE.  This would include all settings (i.e. Pan, volume, sends, loaded effects & configured instrument with patches & configs).  This would allow a person to quicky set up a pre-saved instrument in VE with all it's settings intact.

    2.  A pre-fader option on the sends like most if not all sequencers provide.

    3.  A button next to the VE preferences that would allow one to switch back to the mixer view of VE from an instrument view instead of scrolling through the list on the left and clicking on a bus.

    4.  A "No Output" option on the bottom of each bus/instrument.  I use two sends (1 dry and 1 wet) to control reverb depth and currently select an output that I'm not using to force audio through the sends only.  A "No Output" option would be a cleaner approach make output 17&18 usuable if needed.

    5.  A preference that would allow each instance of VE (Stand-Alone) while loading into memory, also load the last vframe (much like Logic 8 provides) or better yet, the ability to select the vframe that one would want loaded into a particular copy of VE (i.e. VE-1 - Winds, VE-2 - Brass, etc).  This would make start-up much quicker plus would allow flexibility in selecting different project template configurations using multible instances of VE.

    6.  An indicator at the top menu bar that displays the amount of memory (RAM) used and the amount remaining that each instance of VE (stand-alone) will allow.  This would assist in determining how close to the ceiling one is instead of relying on the machine to crash first.  This would assume that the computer has sufficient RAM to allow the instance of VE to reach it's maxium (speaking of OS X).

    Thanks for considering.

  • Hi Chuck.

I agree that nos. 1 and 3 would be useful, and I believe that no.2 is on VSL's to-do list.

As for no.4, why not set your Master Bus output to - inf, all your instrument outputs to 1 Master Bus, your dry sends to the sixteen HW OUTs, your wet sends to a Reverb bus with it's output set to HW OUT1/2.

The Reverb sends obviously controls the amount of reverb!

The HW OUTs in the sends of each channel  now control the depth placement of the instrument.

The channel strip faders controls the overall send into the sequencer.

I haven't been able to access your profile, and am too lazy to go hunting threads to confirm that you use Logic, which I believe you do from memory. You should be able to use all 16 channels, 1 instrument and 15 auxes adjusting the level of the instrument assigned to HW OUT1/2 from the fader in VE.

    Hope that helps a bit..

  • Colin,

I'm trying a new configuration using 4 stand-alone VE's and accomplishing the mixing in each with it's own separate reverb (i.e. Strings, Winds, Brass & Perc).  So far, this approach is really proving out to be great.  I've had a lot of issues in the past with VE and Logic (memory constraints and crashing - still 32 bit)  This approach so far, has allowed me to load a large array of patches without having to purge and keeping everything realtime (almost as good as slaves - which I don't have).  My Mac Pro has the horsepower to handle all four instances.  Leaving VE in Logic places constraints on the amount of memory I have available to me.

I understand what your suggesting but I'm not currently using the Logic's mixer and plan to hard patch the outputs channels 1&2 of my audio interface (combined audio from VE 1,2,3,4) into input 3&4 of my audio interface for recording the audio within logic.  Still haven't proven out the audio routing but being able to play a large arrangement with my current equipment is a great first step.

  • Understood Chuck.. was wrongly assuming you were using VE as a plug-in. It's one way of using all 16 channels for instruments.

  • Thanks Colin,

Yes what you suggested is how I was configured originally when I was using VE inside of Logic.  I tried the same config with VE stand-alone but without having the pre-fader functionality in VE, I loose the depth control.  My work-around was to kill the output on the instrument bus in VE and route wet and dry sends individually to control reverb amount and debth.  It would just be nice to not have to send the signal to 17/18 by having a NOT ASSIGNED option available thereby freeing up 17/18 for valid output if desired.  I think you understand my sitituation.

    Thanks again for the suggestion......
