Sibelius + VSL SE+/extended -- mute and normal on one staff?
I'm new to VSL (SE plus and extended) and in playing around with the Sibelius sound set, I don't see a way to get mutes (let's say for trumpets) on the same staff. I imagine there's some way to put the Trumpet C(+) and Trumpet C mute(+) matrices in a preset, but how then do I make Sibelius switch between them? Thanks in advance!

Hi Andi,
I've been trying to get 4 Horns on two staves to switch from normal to mute using "con sord" and "sensa sord".
I've set up 4 channels in manual sound sets as VE woodwind brass
1- Horn a4
2- Horn a4 stopped
3- Horn a4
4- Horn a4 stopped
and the equivalent number of programs in VE with the right midi assignments.
Horns 1 and 2 never switch to mute. Horns 34 play mute then when switched to "senza" seem to be routed through the same program as Horns 12 without mute.
Help!
Kind regards,
Nick

Hello Nick!
Please note that in order to use the Horn ensemble (4 players), you need the Technique text command "a4" at the beginning of the staff. If you don't have this command, the Sound ID of the staff and the Sound ID of the program on the Manual Sound Sets page don't match and the switches (and maybe channel assignments) will not work correctly. In addition to that the "senza sord." command also resets the a4 command. So you will have to add the "a4" command again at the same note as the "senza sord." command. You can hide the "a4" commands in order to keep the layout clean.
Best regards,
Andi

I've just been asking a similar question on the Sibelius forum and the only helpful answer referred me to this thread. Trouble is that the answer is not given!
I am using the Special Edition trumpet ensemble and trumpet mute as separate instruments (with one line each) in Sibelius 7.1.3 but would like to be able to use both standard and mute techniques on both staff lines. What's the best way to achieve this?

that was how I'd set things up, Andi and it doesn't work. What is missing -- and ironically it is on exactly the same page 23 of the Wallander Noteperformer manual as a solution for unmapped sounds -- is to create a new instrument "Trumpet Mute" based on the original but with mute as preferred sound and name changed. Once you do this, you can switch from the Mute staff with a "trumpet in Bb" instrument change or on the normal trumpet staff to mute with the "Trumpet Mute" instrument. I basically couldn't see the obvious wood for the trees!

yes, you set me off in the right direction anyway, Andi, and I can now do what I'd been planning 😊
