  • Articulations

Hi there, I've just created a new score for string orchestra and I loaded all the correct sounds, but whenever I click play, it only plays in staccato... when I click on '2A' for it to be legato and then play the piece, it jumps straight back to '1A' (Staccato). Any help? Thanks, Ben.

  • Hi Ben!

Have you made all the settings for programs and channels in the Playback Devices/Manual Sound Sets tab?

I recommend watching our tutorial video at the following location:
    http://vsl.co.at/en/211/1343/1348/243.vsl

and reading the Sibelius 5.2 and Vienna Ensemble Setup guide you can download at the following location:
    http://vsl.co.at/en/68/375/377/239.htm

In order to help you better, I need some more information. What VSL products are you using with Sibelius? What is the name of the sound set you are using? Which version of Sibelius do you have (Sibelius 5.2.5 would be best)?

    Best wishes,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi, I have all the correct settings in the Playback Devices/Manual Sound Sets tab. I have VSL SE and SE+. The soundsets are the appassionata violins, violas, cellos and doublebasses. Thanks, Ben. EDIT: I've tried a few combinations: In the Manual Sound Sets tab, I had selected: "violin ensemble appassionata" (etc for violin I, violin II, viola, cello and doublebass). In the actual Vienna Ensemble I had selected the appassionata violin I (+), violin II, viola, cello and doublebass. This gave me only articulation '1A'. Next in the Manual Sound Sets tab, I selected: "violin ensemble" (etc for all the others). In the VE, I selected the appassionatas (+) again, but this time, it only gave me articulation '3A'. Next in the Manual Sound Sets tab, I selected: "violin ensemble appassionata" (etc for all the others). In the VE, I selected the Orchestral Strings (+) but it only gave me articulation '1A' again. So next in the Manual Sound Sets tab, I selected: "violin ensemble" (etc for all the others). And in the VE, I selected Orchestral strings (+) for each of the instruments. This worked (changing articulations automatically) Any ideas? Thanks, Ben.

  • Hi Ben!

Do you use the Special Edition PLUS sound set? You can find it at the following location (after logging in):

  • I have in the 'Sounds' folder both the sound sets for Special Edition and Special Edition PLUS. Ben.

  • I see that you installed both sound sets, but which one do you use? In the Playback Devices you find a list of active devices. You probably activated Vienna Ensemble. In the right column you see the sound set, that is loaded. If you want to use the PLUS matrices, you will have to load the VE Special Edition PLUS sound set.

  • I don't have that choice! All I have a choice of is VSL Special Edition and VSL Ensemble Special Edition!...

  • Also, do I need both sound sets in the 'Sounds' folder, or just the PLUS one?

  • If you want to use Special Edition matrices (without the +), you will also need the normal Special Edition sound set. It can't be bad having both of them installed.

I guess you copied the sound sets to the wrong folder. Please copy them to the following location:
    Windows XP: Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\Sibelius Software\Sibelius 5\Sounds
    Windows Vista: Users\your username\AppData\Roaming\Sibelius Software\Sibelius 5\Sounds
    Mac OS X: Users/your username/Library/Application Support/Sibelius Software/Sibelius 5/Sounds

You may have to create the "Sounds" folder if it’s not there.

Sibelius needs to be restarted after that.

  • No no! That's exactly the place where they are...

  • Which Sibelius version do you use?
Sibelius 5.1 only finds sound sets for Sibelius 5.1.
Sibelius 5.2 and 5.2.5 only find sound sets for Sibelius 5.2.

Maybe you downloaded the wrong versions of the sound sets.

  • I have version 5.25 I'm afraid I have both the correct sound sets...

  • Can you please tell me, which Operating system you are working on and write down the exact path where you copied which sound sets (or post a screenshot)?

  • Hi, Im using Mac OSX 10.5.6. The path is: Users> Benjamin> Library> Application Support> Sibelius Software> Sibelius 5> Sounds

  • The path is correct. Which file(s) did you copy there?
In your case the following two files should be in there:
    VE Special Edition (Sib 5.2).xml
    VE Special Edition PLUS.xml

When these two files are in the folder and you activate Vienna Ensemble in Sibelius, you should have the possibility to choose "VE Special Edition" or "VE Special Edition PLUS" (amongst others) as sound set.

  • Hi Andi, I feel such a fool! Instead of having extracted the .xml files to the Sounds folder, I had copied the whole folder (together with .txt) into it! Thanks so much for all your continued and supportive help. Ben.

  • Sometimes simple mistakes can take time ... [;)]

I'm glad, we figured it nout now.
