  • Worth the move to Vista 64 from XP Pro 32?

    Hi Everyone.

My M-Audio Profire 2626 finally seems to support Vista 64, according to their site. I've 8Gb RAM in my dual-Opteron box (strictly for Cubase 4/VSTs), but I can only access 4Gb of my RAM (less actually) because I've had to run 32 bit XP.

I use VI extensively (i.e., in every project) along with Superior Drummer 2 and Trilogy when I'm not doing straight orchestral-type things.

Would a switch to V64 that would allow me to use all my 8Gb RAM make a big enough difference to go through the effort? Any other forseeable issues?

I'm thinking of Business Edition as it appears to have the most amount of eye-candy removed.

    Thanks for any help:)

edit - I definitely have some usually-small issues with XP 32, as Vienna Ensemble occasionally loses an instrument, Superior kills Cubase when loading some of the presets, and Cubase sometimes crashes my computer (as in, shuts it right down) but generally it's stable, if quirky, compared to any other computer enviroments I've built over the years.

  • I've been recently been planning to build a 64-bit slave for VE3, but was planning to use XP Pro-64 instead of Vista, as it's my suspicion and understanding that Vista is not yet up to the task for pro audio in terms of stability, performance, and compatibility (others may disagree and have different experiences, and I respect that).  I believe that people have been successfully using VE on XP64 but it is not officially supported, for whatever that's worth.  Can anyone confirm that?

    Thanks,

    - Chris

  • I use XP64 with practically no issues when I'm in a graphical (Photoshop etc.) environment, and would love to use it for VI and Cubase, but my audio interface doesn't support it, only Vista.

Vista is my only hopeful way of getting use out of all my RAM. I'm trying to buy EWQL Choirs (doesn't seem to be available anymore, nor any good choir...scary, I really need a great one!) and I don't really think I'll be able to run everything without that RAM.

  • chris, at least Vienna Ensemble (2 and 3) fully supports XP 64 (AFAIK there is actually only a pro version available for XP 64 bit)

does it make sense to move from XP32 to any 64bit operating system?

yes, if you have 4 GB RAM or more installed and your processor has some 64bit support (core duo, core 2 duo, core 2 quad, every flavour of XEONs, core i7)

is VISTA64 superior to XP64 or vice versa?

it depends ... in any case XP64 and VISTA64 needs to be fully updated - it is easier to install AHCI drivers in VISTA than in XP64 (chipset has to support this and drivers need to be available).

XP64 footprint (memory usage after booting) is ~300 MB, VISTA64 ~1 GB, many VISTA64 or windows server 2003 drivers work for XP64 too, some XP64 only drivers are a little bit outdated.

some applications work better with XP64 than with VISTA64 (eg. sequoia 7 which is needed here for several reasons), the opposite for others.

both are running stable, both need to be cut down a little bit IMO switching off unneccessary services (eg. uPnP or mDSNresponder is absolutely contra productive on an audio machine, for both i'd recommend to use no or just little fixed pagefile, both can be affected by badly written device drivers or applications (eg. do not install daemon tools)

i personally prefer XP64 but at some occasions i'm starting to make friends with VISTA 64 lately, though the playmobile style and spoon-feeding behaviour is a severe hindrance to do so ...

    For cm:

    1) uPnP or mDSNresponder ,

What are and how do I get rid of them?

    2) both can be affected by badly written device drivers or applications (eg. do not install daemon tools)

even If I don't have them in automatic execution?

    For shawngibson

after using XP32 for 4 years and than XP64 for a 6 months, I have updated to Vista 64.

It takes a lot of memory (I don't use pagefile at all), but if you have a powerful PC I think V64 is the best

  • uPnP and similar stuff like network location awarenes ect can be found in services (computer management)

mDSNresponder comes with iTunes and other applications

i noticed daemon tools higher than 347 are producing a lot of hardware interrupts (you can check either with sysinternals' process viewer or watch the taskmanager's process list ... if sum of CPU usage for processes is less than CPU listed in the statusbar you have hardware interrupts) and bluescreens (IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL) with some configurations ... if i need a virtual CD/DVD drive it appears virtual clone drive is currently the best - or say less cumbersome

be aware uninstalling daemontools is tricky - the driver remains in the system even after running a clean uninstall and reboot ...

  •  Thanks Sergino, I'll pick up V64Business Ed.  today and get it all changed over on the weekend. I definitely want my 4+ extra Gb of RAM to be doing something useful:)

Lotsa cool tips on this page, thanks everyone.

But do I use Cubase 32 or 64 bit now??? I'll Ghost my box as it is and if things blow up, I'm still safe:)
