  • OS9 and OSX

Are the performance tools made for both OS9 and OSX?

  • The performance tool for the EXS version will be programmed for both OS versions. First we are focusing on the OS9 version.
But we are very interested to hear how many users already switched to OS 10.

    thanks

  • Welcome back from NAMM Herb.

I think that many Logic users, myself included, are still using OS9 because so many other parties have not released Audio Unit versions of their products.
These include Native Instruments (FM7, Absynth, Reason, etc), Spectrasonics (Atmosphere, Stylus - though I hear Trilogy is OSX compatible) and other big players. Also, Emagic's SoundDiver is still OS9-only.

Newcomers or folks who do not use many VSTi's or plugins have made the move (according to posts on the Logic-Users group) and some are experimenting in both OS9 and OSX.

I doubt that replies on this forum will be an accurate indication - rather expect a gradual migration to OSX with every new Audio Unit software which is released.

    Regards - Colin

  • I´ll upgrade to OSX as soon as Pro Tools 6 is released (february), so I
hope the OSX performance tools is released at the same time
as the EXS24 version of VSL.

  • The Performance Set for EXS24 will be released in april, right?
Will there be a downloadable version of the performance tools for OSX
when the Performance Set is released or do I have to wait a couple of
month extra for the OSX version?

Since the MOTU audio drivers for OS X did arrive, I did switch to MAC OS X last week. The only thing that I can say until now. It looks better and never did crash until today! The Audio-MIDI communication seams to be much more integrated in this OS. No need for OMS anymore...and possible to change audio settings while running the programs.

  • I agree with Iwan - OS X is much more stable than OS 9 - it has built in support for dual-processors and altivec accelerated as standard. I have to point out to musos, though, that Reason has been OS X native for (it seems) nearly a year now, and that NI have nothing to do with it...
So many VSTi have been ported to X now, it's unbelievable - I am sill waiting for HALion, and the release of MachFive from MOTU. Waves V4 happened last week, and with the future of built-in Audio (in AU format) and MIDI, it looks like there's no going back. and that's a good thing!!
At the minute I am using VSL in HALion, under Cubase in 9 - any mastering is done in Cubase SX in X with Waves 4. super.

  • I have to add something to my first post in this threat which I did forgot mention. For me one of the biggest advantages of MAC OSX is the fact that I can use several music-MIDI programs at the same time. I can have Sibelius on one Monitor, Logic on the second one and work on both of them using there respective MIDI capabilities by just clicking in one of the monitors. Since I compose in Sibelius with a piano sound, this is really convenient, I can read –and hear- my score and program in to Logic. I do not really know if this was possible or not with OS 9, but I never could do it without error messages or crashes.

Waves V4 version does NOT work with Logic audio on OS X [:(]

  • The OS9 and OS10 performance tool question:
Here I have (hopefully) good news for you. Emagic decided to implement our tools directly into their engine. So you will get a very userfriendly and stable solution.
But that means, that we have to wait for a logic update.
I hope I can give you more details after Frankfurt Musikmesse.
Personally I'm very happy that the emagic guys made this decision - Thanks a lot and greetings to Hamburg.

The Orchestral Cube should be ready this week. Here you don't have performance repetitions and legatos, so you can work properly without our tools.
If everything works fine it will ship in Europe after Frankfurt.

Fair enough, Iwan - I'm sure it will once Apple/Emagic realise that VST is far from dead... it works great in Cubase!

PS: Herb, does this mean there will be no Mac development from the VSL team, with regard to the perf tool? Only the version created by Emagic? It's good either way...just curious.

  • I would say, it's a form of development cooperation, and it's no exclusive deal. Our focus is, that all users should have the best options to work with our library. Of course, you always need two parties...
