multiple instruments

this is an absolute beginner and punter question but how the heck do you have different instruments playing at once?  for example if a iwant a cello and a glock playing at th esame time do i ned a seperate vst instrument for each or can they both be played through the one same vst?!

yes, that´s the idea behind the Vienna Instruments: One instance for each instrument/section. You should also check out Vienna Ensemble (it´s a host for the Vienna Ensembles, a multitimbral VI, so to say).
