    I just want to announce my new book (German language) about digital orchestras, which has been released this week:

    It is about real and digital musicians and mainly about the room acoustics. How this works and how to simulate

    the seating arrangements (real panning, depth) with samples and sequencer (based on physical calculations).

    Furthermore there a some tips how to use and organize samples within the sequencer and sampler.

    The book is covered by many audio and video examples. It is a perfect guide for VSL samples, which are recorded

    on the silent stage.

    Hi Mike,

    since a book with this special content is exactly what many users without the knowledge of an audio engineer need - like me who is more a composer but an audio engineer - I bought this book instantly after reading your announcement.

    I was getting to page 65 now and for me it´s difficult to comment the (nearly) first half of the book without offending you. I made up my mind if I should write this or not and think if the author himself advertises his product in a forum then it´s legitimate to write his opinion in this forum.

    In the foreword you write This book is addressed to the beginner and to the professional who wants to give his/her music more authenticity. Well, as I wrote above I´m no audio engineer. But the wish to compose orchestral music and to make it hear leaded to experience in sampling and homerecording for more than 20 years now. So I think I can evaluate the knowledge of beginners and advanced learners.

    Well, the first half of the book is only adressed to the absolute beginner who doesn´t know what a DAW is, who doesn´t know what an audio sequenzer is, who doesn´t know what MIDI is and so on. On the first 65 pages of the book the whole content scratches softly the surface. Additionally e.g. I wonder why one should know the embochoure of the woodwind instruments but cannot read about the range of the different orchester instruments. Also I wonder why the directions for loudness / dynamics are mixed up with the articulations in addendum 9.1.

    To be fair - I looked a bit further and the second half of the book seems to have better content. I really hope that the first half was a very long foreword and that the second half is worth the price.

    Hello,

    I just want to announce, that a (really) completely reworked edition of the book is released the next days. Language is English.
    The concept of the book was changed a bit and offers more details on (digital) room acoustic but concerning the practical use for
    musicians (how to use a given setting in a plug in and so on). This edition was authored also by an US composer (name not mentioned).

     

    Main changes are:

    -         no “beginner’s overview” anymore (first 60 pages), book is focused on room acoustics and the use of sequencers and plug ins
    -         starting directly with room acoustics - strongly reworked
    -         more pictures and drawing explaining details
    -         NEW aspects on room acoustics to be used in sequencer and plug ins
    -         a lot of value tables for direct use (example orchestra seating, depths, plug in settings)
    -         drawing templates for own setups
    -         detailed walkthrough for Cubase 4 and Samplitude Pro 10
    -         how to setup VI and Kontakt 3
    -         general walkthrough for other sequencers
    -         using algorithm. reverb and convolution reverb for room acoustics
    -         more sample calculations
    -         new book cover with nice “ad-on” ;-)
    -         several basic tips

    This is all Volume 1.

     

    Volume 2 (coming 2009) will describe in detail how to compose with several sample players like VI and how to start a new music piece
    (action, horror, …) from scratch up to the final mix (uses stuff from Volume 1).

    I’ll post the title of the book and further details soon…

    Übrigens: Das Buchformat wurde nun etwas größer als A5 gewählt und

    ist somit nahezu identisch mit der US-Fassung "The Composer's Approach".

    I looked at the "Leseprobe" and think, the standard paper-size could also be DIN A6.

    The impression after reading this is that the content is more suitable for the beginner than the semi-pro - right?

     Apart from that - where can the reader of your first book order the second version and what´s the price for upgrading?

    Well, DIN A6 would be too small to see all the new figures.

     

    The book is not directed at professional or beginning musicians in a special manner.

    The book may be interesting to anyone, who:

    • is interested in basic room acoustics (musicians view), 2nd edition has a lot of new contents (60 new pages)
    • is interested in required (plug in) parameters to put dry sounding instruments (like the VSL ones) into a virtual room (horizontal panning and depth)
    • wants to learn calculating (plug in) parameters for own room sizes, room positions of single instruments
    • wants to use the pre-calculated (plug in) values of the American seating 


    To avoid misapprehension:

    • Volume 1 does not cover detailed composing techniques or describes “how to compose”.
    • Volume 1 does not cover detailed mixing techniques, except the stuff which is needed for the room positioning of instruments (using EQs, levels, etc.)


      Composing and Mxing is main part of Volume 2.
