  • Flugel Horn

Are there any plans to sample and release a flugel horn?

I was just doing some brass ten piece arranging work and thought how useful it would be!

Second question being - I guess - until and if the above happens, what do other people use? I guess I, unfortunately :( mean outside of VSL.

Obviously the trumpet works as a fill in but....

    Thanks for any answers/advice

    Steve

  • Real players! I find trumpet and flugelhorn the hardest instruments to sample. It will always sound cheezy...

  • Indeed my work is and will be played by real players! - I use VSL as a composition tool, rather than as a rendering tool to produce an end product.

And as such the "gap" in my brass ensemble template is flugel - well, and the random mutes other than straight.

I was just really wondering if VSL had any plans to sample a flugel

  • When composing layouts like you're doing now I prefer using a Solo Horn at low velocity levels (velocity zones p -mf) to substitute the missing Flugelhorn Sound - it comes closer to the warmth of the sound than a sampled trumpet does and in a virtual arrangement will sound much more like a Flugelhorn. Looking on the net for Flugelhorn sounds I found absolutely nothing - just three shitty samples sounding like garbage...

  • There's a decent flugel (modelled but realistic) in Peter Siedlacek's The Trumpet.

  • Thanks guys

Anyone at VSL? Any plans for a flugel?

The brass list is really very extensive and for me the only reasonably regularly used instrument missing is the Flugel (and to be honest I would reckon a Flugel more regular than a Bass trumpet or Euphonium, especially in the Brass ensemble world)

    Just wondering...

  •  Hi Steve,

I´m positive that we will cover the Flugelhorn, but we have not scheduled it yet. There´s so many instruments still waiting, and we don´t want to record in 24-7 shifts....

    But we hear you!

    Best,

    Paul

hopefully that will be in the same special brass II which will inlcude the alto saxhorn in Eb (tenor horn) and in Bb (baritone horn) the Eb soprano cornet and expands the Euphonium samples to inlcude vibrato.

    That would about cover it.
