  • New SE user questions

     Hi to everybody!

This is my first post in this forum.

Few weeks back, I got the Special Edition (full version) and the SE plus (also full version).I found the library to be really user friendly. Quality-wise, it is everything I was hoping for. However, there are a few questions :

    1. Solo violin e.g. has a perf-rep patch. Is this a round robin style patch?  It seems to work nicely only in a rather slow playing speed.

    2. There are also VI fast-rep BPM 150/170/190 articulations. These play back a sequence of fast repetitive notes. What I would have expected was more again a round robin mode were I could maybe play 4 quick repeated notes which then would be automatically asigned to different samples. As it appears to me now, with a fixed tempo, those repetitions are of limited use. Please corect me if I am wrong.

3.Considering "the learn and optimize" feature. When using the Vienna Ensemble, it would be ideal to use this feature on all instruments that are loaded. Kontakt can do this is it also possible in Vienna Ensemble?

4.The legato patches seem also to work better in slower tempos. I already noticed that the larger editions have different legaos for faster tempi. However, I would like to know what would be the preferred articulations  to sequence with SE 16th runs in - lets say- 120 BPM with violins in legato.

    regards Veet

  •  Hi Veet,

and welcome to the community [:)]

Thanks for your feedback, I have answered your questions below:

    1) Performance Repetitions are indeed recorded as a round robin. The difference to "normal" articulations is that the tone has been recorded repeatedly (as a repetition) - which affects the attack of the next tone. In the Special Edition PLUS you get 2 Performance Repetitions: legato and staccato. The legato repetitions are designed for slower repetitions, the staccato repetitions for faster reps.

    2) The fast repetitions consist of 9 repeated notes - you can "get out" of the repetitions by releasing the key at any time and you will be provided with a release sample automatically. Great for fast patterns. As every articulation by itself, it is of "limited use" - the combination of articulations is the key.

    3) Yes, that´s possible, but only step by step. You can click on "learn" for al Vienna Instruments separately and optimize every instance after one run through your arrangement. A more comfortable solution is on our to-do-list!

    4) well observed, the legatos were recorded in a slow tempo. We have also recorded dedicated runs for the Orchestral Strings - in all major, minor harmonic, half-and whole tone scales for this purpose. Either these or the Performance Trills would be the perfect choice.

With the Special Edition, it will be harder to get a good result - maybe someone wants to jump in here with a good idea?

    Best,

  •  Hallo Paul!

    Thanks for your spot-on answer.

    4) is not yet fully answered though, but otherwise SE is the ideal tool for me. As much as I couldnt afford the Cube it would be simply owerwhelming to have such an endless array of options at hand.It would be nice to have one upgrade path that is less steep than going from SE to the full Cube. But for now, i am fully busy to cope with the possibilities at hand with  SE. For learning purposes, it would be best to provide as many demo-arrangements with midi files.

-If anybody has some tips about fast runs within SE dont hesitate to share them.
