  • Q. for Beat - Stereo Enhancer on "Irish Strings"

First off Beat - this is a lovely piece and great for comparing the various string libraries with the same material.  Why are you using Cubase's Stereo (on the whole mix?) - or just pieces?

I hadn't even thought to use this in Cubase - does it add any artifacts to the 'sound'?   Thanks for your reply.

    Irish Strings

    Hi Rob

Yes, this piece I only made for comparing the string libraries. So it is nothing special for itself.

By the way there is also the "Compare Rag" which you also can use for comparing the string libraries.

Why the Stereo Enhancer VST effect of Cubase 4?

I used the Stereo Enhancer below 100% - so I used it in fakt as "monoizer" for every single instrument or ensemble.

There is always the question how to use the balance L & R an how to make the signal more mono.

    We some possibilities, you know.

First I prepared the little Irish piece with every Library.

Finally I opened Cubase again and made a pure audio mix with all the recorded tracks.

    Mixer

    I monoized...

    - the solo strings to ~65%

    - the chamberstrings to ~ 75%

    - the orchestra strings to ~ 85%

    - the appassionatas didn't got a stereo narrowing (exeption: the melody)

    Remark:

You can also do this process by using the special balance modes of Cubase (Balance and Stereo Narrowing).

I made several listening tests with all these modes and possibilities.

All monoizing possibilities (Balance Modes) have lost some briliance while making the signal more mono -

but not the new Cubase 4 VST-Stereo-Enhancer-Tool.

    All the best

  •  Interesting Beat.   What about just 'power panning' in VE2 (or 3).   Right now my VE2 instance has each VI (within the VE2) sent out on a seperate Cubase channel where I 'narrow' using balance and stereo narrowing).   Seems Ok but maybe I should try the C4 stereo plug to compare.

    Thanks again.

[:$]I must confess that I still have a too week PC. Less CPU-Power and not enough RAM (4GB / 3,2GB for using).

So the VE isn't very interesting at the moment because I only can load 2 instances with a couple of samples

and that's it. I have to save every little Bit and CPU-Power for the moment --- But....

    [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y] [Y]

    I've ordered a 64Bit PC with 16GB RAM > QuadCore...the estimated delivery... 24th of June...

The world will change I hope. I'm dreaming of having all the instruments of a project on hand in the meantime...

Then I will use the Vienna-Ensemble for sure ... with the Power-Panning...

Or I will get new problems with Vista 64, Cubase 64, Synchrosoft, iLoc of Altiverb, > Nightmare?

    Chin up Beat! [H]

  • Oh yes, Beat is going 64 bit! :D

Where'd you order it from, Beat?

     Dell - Ireland?

I'm just going to install Cubase 64Bit. It seems to work.

Had some problems to install the newest Graphic Card Drivers.

I wanted to install the Syncrosoft software/driver and wasn't

    successful as well.

Now, together with Cubase it worked without any problem.

The 64-Bit Ultimate Windows System is the most savest Windows  ever [:)].

The other side of the coin:

Even if you are loged in as the super hyper administrator you have

sometimes not the rights to install what you want. [:(]

So I'm just reading a book "Dirty Tricks" Windows VISTA & Service Pack 1" [6]

    Further I've bought a USB Data-Transpher-Cable XP>VISTA for copying

all the samples into the new machine... we'll see....

  • Beat:

Your appossianata strings I demo: the tune at the end based on a circle of 5ths, is that from something or is it your own? i ask because you love baroque music and it might be a 'passioned-up' version of something from that circle-of-5ths rich period :D

    Hi Robert

I assume that you are speaking about the "Appassionata Articulations Demo". "It is something from my own" .

In one of my tutorials I tried to imitate the Mantovani-String-Sound. Therefore I composed this little - but nice - waltz melody.

    This is the Original.

It is one of lots of short compositions which I've done to show the possibilities of samples.
