  • Aging G5: Mac mini a good VE3 slave?

    Hello,

I'm hitting the CPU limits on my Dual 2.5 G5 and looking for some relief. We have a mac mini "business computer" that I was thinking of turning into a slave, but got discuraged knowing I'd have to speed almost as much as the computer for an audio interface to route the audio digitally back into Logic! However, with VE3's audio & midi over eithernet, that is no longer the case, and mini's in theory look to be a very cost effective solution once again!

So I'm looking for some practical user feedback: Would adding a single mini make any difference in my straining Dual 2.5 G5? Anyone at VSL and/or users have any benchmarks? Any problems running VE3 between PPC & intel macs? Are mini's a more cost effective slave in the long run, or is eventually getting a new mac pro the only way to go? What are you guys using as mac slaves?

Thanks in advance for your help!

  • I don't know the answer, I'm afraid, but it doesn't sound like you have much to lose by trying it other than the cost of VE.

However, the real agenda behind my post is that I'm curious: why does CSUN have dorms in Palmdale?

  • as nick indicates: nothing to loose, especially since you can get a demo license for VE3 on the product page ...

there are several models of the mini ... if it's an older PPC type i'd assume this wouldn't help too much ...

  • Mac Minis are limited to 2GB Ram, which you can eat up quickly. If you already have the Mac Mini, then go for it, but I wouldn't buy one for that purpose. There was a brief rage for that about two years ago, as I recall. Chris Hein was a big booster of it. Personally, I'm just going to buy more RAM for my MacPro, which is more cost effective today than it would have been two years ago.

  • I probably should have checked this BEFORE I installed the 14-day demo, but do I need to have two vienna keys in order to run a slave? I planed to test VE3 by running ALL my VI licensees from the slave, and thus thought I didn't need an additional key...but now I'm thinking I need another key on my main rig in order to get the sound back into the G5? Is this true? Do I need to get another key just to test VE3? I would hate to find out that adding a mac mini doesn't give me noticeable improvements and thus I waisted money on an additional Vienna key!

  • More importantly, is it that you go between Palmdale and the CSUN dorms?

Haha, I need to update my profile. At the time I created this I was living in the CSUN dorms during the school year, and in Palmdale during the Summer. Now I just live in Palmdale. 😊

Now thats over with 😊 I do need to get another Vienna Key, dont I? :(

  • you need a license (and so a key) on every computer you want to open an interface (and load sample data) - you don't need a license on your main DAW if it is only used as sequencer loading the plugin and not opening an interface but only connecting to the slave.

  • GOOD NEWS!! I'm going to investigate this further and get back to you. Thanks!
