  • VI doesn't find samples and crashes Logic

    Hi,
When I try to load the Matrix "Orchestra Strings - Combi" or a Patch of the "20 Strings orchestra" that comes with the "Orchestral Strings 1", a window pops up telling me that VI can't find certain samples - here is an example excerpt:

    Cannot find /Basses orchestra wav/wav/01 Einzelnoten/KB-6_stac/KB-6_stac_p2/KB-6_stac_p2_C1
    Cannot find /Basses orchestra wav/wav/01 Einzelnoten/KB-6_stac/KB-6_stac_p1/KB-6_stac_p1_C1
    Cannot find /Basses orchestra wav/wav/01 Einzelnoten/KB-6_stac/KB-6_stac_mf2/KB-6_stac_mf2_C1

     This crashes Logic!

This happens only with the "Strings Orchestra" Matrix and Patches, not with the Violins or Violas. To me this "smells" like missing (= not installed) samples, for I've already run the "Directory Manager" several times.

I've freshly installed the "Orchestral Strings 1" plus the update for this library (2008-04-10). I have the latest VI-software installed (v2.0 build 3173), my Synchrosoft License Control Center  version is 5.2.24.7.

    Please help!

  • I would imagine that this is because Cellos and Basses are in Strings II, which you don't have. You can't load the Strings patches unless you have all the samples.

  •  Thanks for your answer, DG.

However, I thought that the the "Strings Orchestra" is not a group of put-together-samples, but that it uses samples where the COMPLETE strings orchestra plays at the same time, otherwise: what would be the sense of these Patches?

And besides, why would the Matrix and the Patches of the "20 Strings orchestra"  appear on my "Matrix assign page" respectively "Patch assign page" if they weren't installed?

I can't answer your questions, but I'm pretty sure my answer above is correct. You can't use the Strings patches unless you have Orchestral II.

  • That would explain it ... even if I don't really understand it.

    Thanks, DG!

Maybe someone of the VSL people could comment on this?!

I can explain some of it. At the time VI was released it was not possible for the user to create a string patch that went from Double Basses all the way up to Violins. However, because some users find it useful for sketching (although for any proper work it wouldn't be suitable) they provided a patch that combined all the samples. However, all any of these patches do is reference the samples already on the drive, so if the samples don't exist on your drive, the matrix won't load, even though it is visible in the VI window. Now (and here it is all speculation) the Strings matrices have to be installed with either Strings I or II, even if they can't be loaded without both of them, so that is why you are in the position that you are currently in. If you'd bought just Strings II I'm not sure that you would even have known about these matrices. I don't really think that any comment from VSL will help you. The simple fact is that you only have bought Violins and Violas, so therefore even if you create your own patch in VE, it still won't go any lower than C3.

    I hope that this helps.

  •  Yes, it does. Thank you, DG!
