  • Opus 1 : how many velocity layers per instrument ?

I have read the list of articulations for Opus 1 on the products page.
But I saw no mention about how many velocity layers are available for each kind of instruments : 2, 3, 4, more ?
So can someone here tell me ?
    Thanks in advance

  • hello sirbellog!

opus 1 has the same amount of velocity layers than the pro edition has. we didn't save space through deleting velocity layers. we reduced the sample-amount through mapping the samples in fulltone-intervals. to answer your question: most instrument have 4 velocity layers. there are few which have 5 (for example: clarinet in Bb) and few which have 3 (for example: piccolo flute).

    best wishes

  • Thanks Rainer.
Well, I'm pleased to learn that 4 to 5 velocity levels are present in Opus, but a bit disapointed about the mapping because I did think that it was chromatic.
I'd say that the only demo of Opus availablle so far is great and does not show any flaws resulting from this "50% mapping", but now I'd really like to hear some more demos then with less instruments, but more exposed, just to make sure of the sonic quality....
Nothing to come soon ? Is'nt it planned, for example, to "port" some of the classical pieces made for the big library to Opus ?
Or anyone here wanting to expose his/her work with Opus ?

  • Hi Sirbellog
i have purchased Opus 1 and sended my first piece to VSL.
Belive me no problems for tone mappings.Vsl have worked very fine.

  • I thank you Anton,
    for your comments.
I have another question for whom can answer it : if I decide to purchase Opus, I will use the library with Halion.
It seems that the Performance Tool is not impossible to use with Halion, so this is not the issue.
And Halion converts gig files quite well, especially in the department of keyswitches, but noticeably less well when it comes to more complex programming, like xfades between layers. I unfortunately am not an expert at programming, and would not like to spend 2 years tweaking the library, so my question is :
is Opus mainly made out of "basic" k-switched programs, or does it involve more sophisticated programming features -which might be a problem conversionwise ?
I would also appreciate comments from people like me (I mean Halion users) who took the same boat and can report good and bad experiences.

  • All our libraries are offering various mappings.
So you can choose between different options:
Normal velocity splits or modwheel blends, keyswitch combinations or only basic programmings, versions with or without release triggers.

If you converting all basic programmings you should not have problems and you have access to the whole sample database.

Generally all modwheel blending programms do have pendants without modwheel.

  • Great to hear that,
    thank you Herb !
I feel more and more tempted to go for Opus, and the 2 latest demos posted yesterday are one more point in favor for this choice....
    Two more questions :
    - are there light versions for the provided instruments (to accomodate ram), which can be replaced later, at rendering stage, with full ones ?
    - is a good manual provided (paper or pdf), which explains to newbies how the Tool works and what it can do, and also the terminology and meaning for the program's names ? (this last kind of thing is quite a time saver when converting libraries because it helps converting exactly what you need)

  • sirbellog, a detailed manual in booklet size - regarding the format, not the number of pages, eg. opus 1 has 84 pages - comes with the DVDs. although the instrument names are pretty self-explaining, the mapping, abbreviations and more usefull info is provided.
if you want to keep the usage of RAM low, you can load the more *slim* instruments and reassign them later
