  • Dynamic (velocity) control with Sibelius 5.1 ?

    Hello!

I'm only working with the Vienna Special Edition and Sibelius for a few weeks. My problem is the dynamic control between Sibelius and VI.

Whether fortissimo or sforzato, it works fine.

But how can I obtain a crescendo for example. Is it possible to control the velocity X-fade in Vienna Ensemble with Sibelius? If so, can anyone describe me (possibly step by step) what I have to do? I just want to hear a crescendo.

It would be really great. Thanks a lot.

  • There is a plug-in that comes with Sibelius, Playback/Cresc./Dim. Playback, that attempts to insert MIDI messages to create the crescendo/diminuendo effect; you need to have added hairpins to the score to tell Sibelius where to start and end with the changes.

I've only used it once, and didn't like the results (they sounded juddery), but the playback was via GPO through Kontakt; VI/VE might well do a better job.

  • With Sibelius 5 the crescendo plugin is obsolete, Sibelius can playback hairpins by itself and it works nicely. You have to assign the right controller in your soundset, usually set to modwheel. Sorry, I did this the last time quite some time ago and I don't remember the details (since then my setup is standing...).

I suggest visiting the Sibelius forum which is very helpful with these questions.

  • With regard to this  - can anyone tell me what change I need to make so that Sib makes volume changes inc cresc etc via the velocity X-fade rather than expression? The standard VSL SE soundset seems to deal with crescs already but with expression so they don't really come across that well

I've had a look at the sound set in the SSE and to be honest am reasonably baffled.....

    Thanks

  • Have you tried using the Map Control in VI to set Velocity xFade to be C11 and Expression to be nothing?

    Hi,

This comes from the Garritan site as far as I can remember: it relates the (de-)crescendo with CC1 (as used in GPO).

Put this file in your plugin library under "playback"

You can easily change the CC number by the way from 1 to whatever number: open this file in your text editor look for CC1 and change it to CCx.

    www.erikotte.nl/CrescAndDimCC1.plg

So for the record: I didn't make this myself!

    regards and enjoy

    Erik

PS In my opinion Sibelius is rather clumsy dealing with this kind of CC matching, although it is a perfect notation program. It is better to export your Sibelius file eventually into a midi file and than import it into a decent sequencer, imo.

  • As said, in Sibelius 5 you don't need this cresc plugin anymore. If you have a legit copy of Sibelius you can post on their forum. By all means ask your question there as one hour later you will have a perfectly playing back crescendo.
