  • Big Problem: Notes get cut before the end of the samples!

Ok I finally got to work with the VSL library in the studio I work with.
We have the first edition library running on gigasampler.

Here's the problem I have that I haven't been able to resolve yet. This is a big one and our deadlines are short, of course!!!

I recorded with my keyboards a string section. Nothing difficult. 3 patches are loaded assigned this way:
    - Channel 1&2 : VLN
    - Channel 3: VIOLA
    - Channel 4 : Cellos
    - Channel 5 : Cellos
Giga is synced with Digital Performer on Mac.
    I'm using a legato patch.
Tempo is around 100 per quarter note.

    Now here's the problem:
    - when I record my tracks (in solo mode), the note will stop before the sample ends. Let's say the sample is about 6 seconds long. I'm playing a whole note for 4 bars and the note will stop at 1 1/2 bar. It doesn't make any sense.

I thought it would be a polyphonic pb but it still does it when I'm in solo.
When I look at my MIDI editor, the note has the right duration and the note off is at the end of the note.

    What's going on???

This really annoys me since I cannot even bounce an easy 16 bars string section! Needless to say the result is disastrous since one of the string section suddenly stops playing in the middle of phrase. Not really musical!

I know I'm doing something wrong but I have no idea what!

Please help because my deadline is for tonight [:(]

  • Dear Vincent,

Have you tried shortening the length of the previous note to the long note? It only needs to be a bit (determined by the parameters on the performance tool) and it's usually hardly noticable, but shortening it so there is a small break between the notes basically plays a "starting note" sample rather than a "transition" sample (I think).

Another option - have a sustained note (one of the _sus patches) on another MIDI channel and play that instead. You could copy your existing legato track to the other track and simply delete the short notes. Depending on your legato patch (p or f) you might need to adjust the volume of the sustained note up or down. Hope this helps.

    Kind Regards,

    Nick.

  • Hi Nick!
Thanks for the tip. It fixed the problem.

I still have to figure out how to switch from one program to the other but that's in my department now [:)]

This is kind of weird that we have to do that since it basically cancels what the legato mode is for, ie not using the same sample with attack.

Anyway, since my deadline is so short, this will work for now!
