  • Space designer or altiverb

    Hi all,

Before MIR release, I plan to buy space designer or altiverb. Does anyone of you compare those two products with VSL sample? Wich one to choose?
Any help or input would be great.
I know space designer is logic only, so lets talk in the logic environment.

    Thanks

    Laurent

  • Laurent,

Difficult call - Remember its not the device itself that really counts but the IR's that are available for it. (see note below)

My initial reaction to using Space Designer was a bit negative (see my comments on the Logic Forum) and Altiverb is simpler to use.

However having used SD in anger for the last two months I would say it is probably the best bit of software I have purchased to date. Yes it is processor hungry. On a dual G4 1.25 I can comfortably get three instances (with 40-50 instandces of EXS and other things like mda Imager). On the PB 1.33 I get a single instance.

SD allows you to adjust the IR (Attack-Release, Sample Rate and Length, Tail time etc)

    Further points to consider

Altiverb's IR format is proprietary and there are some great spaces available for it.
SD uses the Open IR format.
SD has an IR synthersizer function - which is great for creating a new Space from the original IR Space.
SD's library is much more extensive from day 1. (and without additional cost)

Note: To broaden the subject a little bit - how many IR's do you need? Well I guess that really depends on the types of music you are producing - I have found that two IR spaces mostly covers my needs. Finding the right 'space' is the problem.

At the end of the day I would suggest that you demo both and see what suits you best.

  • Thanks tattie for your answer,
In fact I already tried the two demos but it is hard to make a comparison because of the only 4 presets given in the space designer demo. I also tried to put the altiverb's IRs into Space designer but I didn't find a way to make it work.
Did you mean altiverb is less CPU hungry than Space designer?
I only plan to open one or two instances at the same time on my little G4/933. Still a few month of patience before new G5.
Do you know how compatible are the Impulses by Numerical Sound into Space designer/Altiverb?

Thanks again for such a great forum full of kind people

    Laurent

  • AFAIK, Ernest Cholakis from Numerical Sound offers dedicated versions of his unbelievably good IRs for AltiVerb, as well as "generic" audio files for less picky convoluters (like SIR, SD and so on).

    -> www.numericalsound.com for details.

  • hello all.

Does anyone have experience with both enough to comment?

With the $199 upgrade coming up in March (we hope) to the Logic Pro which will include Space Designer... is it worth waiting - or is it worth putting the money down on the Alitverb? I agree with the "2 is enough" concept - I am most concerned in find a verb that will be invisible in the mix.
