  • New to Altiverb (Todd AO) - can you take a listen

    Hi there,

I am new to this AV (really like it) - but would appreciate your opinion on the mix.  Too wet, too dry, balance, etc?

I am using SvK's idea of using Todd AO with 3 ER's and 3 tails on send/return busses (I like the incredible flexibility it offers in final mix).

Of course all the samples are VSL.[:)]

Thanks for any suggestions to get this mix better.

    All the best,

    Rob

  • I'm betting that you think it's too wet.

  •  Yes Paulr I think I could roll off a tad of the tails and maybe ER's on this mix.   Also 're-peat' (from VI control) had some good suggestions about rolling off a tad of the low and low/mids on the pizzs to clean it up a bit.  [:)]

Have a contractor in here today ripping down walls so I am afraid nothing gets updated today [:'(]

  • Yes - Repeat would know what he's talking about. From memory, he writes some very nice sounding things. I don't read the VI forum btw.

Mixing is really a matter of taste and also how an employer let's say, wants a thing to sound. So reverb falls into that. The thing that stood out to me wasn't so much the pizz (although that can always be prominent) - but the woodwinds sounded a little muddy - not so much when the oboe is obviously solo as it were - but when it all comes in.

As usual, a nice sounding work.
I'm better at hearing a mix from someone else's work than my own - so how useful that is..............

  • Thanks Paul - let me see what I can do on the WW's to bring some clarity to them. :)

  • Hey Rob. I think this Mix really came out nicely. I'd be interested to try out your mix template if that's possible. I think you've captured the bass essence much better than my Todd AO template did.

  • Hi Hetoreyn,

I just used Svk's method (from the other post).   I really like this as it gives a lot of flexibility on levels.

  • Sorry .. but can you point out the post .. I've been looking for it but can't find it.

  •  Here's the link and specific post.  Hope this helps

The Todd AO verbs require NO Eq (the new set by alti-verb) They just need to be used CORRECTLY......you will need to set up 6 altiverbs.......3 for the ERs only AND another 3 for the tails only.........violins and violas get sent to the 3.m ER......make sure the ER is just as loud as the vienna direct sound from stem (all Altiverbs set to 100% wet and DON NOT use their "direct sound" system).....Next up are the woodwinds....these get sent to the 8m ER......here you want the ER 3-4 db LOUDER than the Vienna direct sound..........etc, etc....you get it?............if you are meticulous about setting up the various instrument groups to the ER (early reflection busses) IT SOUNDS AMAZING. • Thanks for showing the post .. but in reading it ..I have no idea how to implement this. Way to complicated. A Template would be easier to try it out with.

  • I too would like to see this. So you have 3 ER's which you send violins, ww and brass to each. Then you have 3 tails, are these the 3 tails to match the 3 ER's? Then do you just send violins, ww and brass to their respective tail?

If so, why seperate the tail from the er? I must be missing something.
